Europe’s best holiday destination for 2024 is ‘sun kissed’

Lonely Planet has named the best countries to visit in 2024

Planning next year’s holiday? Luckily Lonely Planet has just released its travel hotlist for 2024. While this year’s top destination was Mongolia, one European country made the list.

Croatia, a gorgeous country on the coast, made the top 10 rankings. It’s a great choice for Britons with lower prices than the UK and cheap flights on offer from many of Britain’s major airports.

A Lonely Planet spokesperson said: “Sun kissed coastline, myriad islands, dramatic mountains and historic walled cities, travel to Croatia has become even easier with its entry into both the border free Schengen Area and the Eurozone.”

Croatia joined the Schengen Zone in 2023 and now uses the Euro. The warmest months to visit are July and August but tourists will enjoy fewer crowds from April to June and September to October.

With so much to see, what are Croatia’s highlights?

Dubrovnik

Croatia’s most famous historic walled city, Dubrovnik is one of the country’s top destinations. Tourists can admire gorgeous sea views from the city’s ramparts, get lost in the cobbled Old Town streets or check out some of Dubrovnik’s Game of Thrones filming locations.

Lonely Planet said: “Croatia has dozens of walled towns, but Dubrovnik is the most striking, with honey coloured fortifications rising above cerulean waters.”

Hvar

Croatia has 78 islands and luckily the country’s extensive ferry network makes it easy to hop between the dreamy spots. Visit Hvar for trendy restaurants and cocktails. Check out Brac to relax on gorgeous Zlatni Rat beach, one of the country’s prettiest spots.

Split

Another coastal city, Split is slightly less packed with tourists than Dubrovnik and slightly more affordable. The city has several pretty beaches outside the centre. Don’t miss the Diocletian’s Palace in the centre of town which was built at the end of the third century.

Plitvice

Breathtaking Plitvice National Park is one of Croatia’s must-sees. The country’s oldest and largest national park, Plitvice’s waterfalls and lakes are incredibly beautiful. Tourists can explore the park on one of several hiking trails but bear in mind it’s incredibly busy during the summer. Krka National Park is another gorgeous national park.
