Literary lovers will have undoubtedly heard of Canterbury, Kent.
The homeplace of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, it’s a location synonymous with history and culture.
But it’s also a place where a pub is helping put it on the map – The Dog at Wingham recently taking the title of Gastro Pub of the Year South by The Food Awards England 2023.
Here we take a closer look at the city, located in Kent, which is small in relative terms with a population of just 43,432.

Another who said they’d had a “perfect visit” to the city added: “Stunning architecture, amazing atmosphere, packed with fascinating history spanning centuries.”
Canterbury isn’t too far from the capital London – a 1h 39m ride on the train.
What about property prices? How affordable is it to live there?
According to Rightmove, properties in Canterbury had an overall average price of £366,447 over the last year comparing to an average national house price in the UK of £289,824.
Could it be time to snap one up given that values are on an upward trajectory?
Overall, sold prices in Canterbury over the last year were eight percent up on the previous year and 11 percent up on the 2019 peak of £331,159.
Destination website Muddy Stilettos explains why that might be the case.
She said: “This cultural cathedral city ticks a lot of boxes when it comes to setting up home.
“You are never more than five minutes’ walk away from a green park within the city centre and an easy drive to the coast in most directions.
“There are tons of quirky local businesses which give the city its unique spirit and eats from fresh seafood to Michelin-starred restaurants to choose from.”
She added: “Together with a decent array of good private and state schools (including grammars!), need we say more?”
