Brit finds UK beach shaped like mermaid’s tail that’s ‘like being abroad’

There are dozens of beautiful coves, bays and beaches across the UK. Some are ranked better than others – but there are still beautiful options for a day out from Scotland to Cornwall.

There are those compared to Hawaii in Devon to a town that’s been dubbed "like Turkey". Plus, there’s also a fabulous beach in Yorkshire that people have said is like being in a sunny foreign country.

Well, the best is yet to come as one Folkestone cafe has been dubbed "like being on holiday”. Mermaid Beach in Folkestone is a particularly beautiful and unusual bay,

It’s characterised by a shingle shore with rocks arranged to look like an enormous mermaid tail. There are pretty pink beach huts and plenty of lush foliage and flowers on the headland behind.

The beach has gained attention recently as its been shared on TikTok as an "unreal place to visit in the UK". Plus one reporter for KentOnline claims she visited Mermaid's Cafe which looks out onto the beach – and felt like she was abroad.

Chantal Weller commented: "Hidden above the promenade within the trees, Mermaid's Cafe is not huge but offers the most incredible views of the shoreline. This hidden gem of a cafe could be overlooked if it were not in such a stunning and popular location, so I would urge you to pay it a visit.

"Overlooking the beautiful blue sea, I felt as though I was on holiday when I was only 20 minutes from home enjoying a cheese toastie – which was one of the best I have eaten."

Holidaymakers posting on TripAdvisor were also keen to share the benefits of Mermaid Beach. Sarah Hixon, from Cambridge, said: "Lovely sheltered corner, shingle, gently sloping. Rocks and stuff to climb.

"Coastal Park just behind with large kids play area and of course the brilliant Mermaid Cafe – coffees, ice cream, sandwiches and snacks. Toilets in the coastal park too."

So it seems like this beautiful beach not only has a unique look and easy access to the water, but all the food, drink and facilities you need for a great day out as a family.

Folkestone also had plenty to offer in the area if you want to make a weekend out of your trip. You can head to Leas Bandstand to enjoy some live music in the sun. Mermaid fans can head to The State to see the Folkestone Mermaid – an iconic sculpture by Cornelia Parker.

The Battle of Britain Museum is an aviation history hub where you can see everything to do with wartime planes and artefacts. History buffs will love seeing the memorabilia from over 700 crashed airplanes.

If you're not near Folkestone there are still lots of other beaches we'd recommend for a day out. Brits looking for a beautiful beach to visit further south can try Ruislip Lido Beach which is on the London Underground. However, sadly you cannot swim in the water.

Those wanting a drip can try Woody Bay in Devon – a beach with waterfalls and a Victorian bath pool looks like paradise surrounded by trees, waterfalls and even a steam train. It's paradise!

Alternatively, head down to Cornwall. People have raved about Nanjizal Beach in Cornwall thanks to its gorgeous sand and water. They also praised Pedn Vounder which some say is like the Caribbean in Britain.
