Japan will reopen its borders to foreign tourists in group tours beginning June 10, almost two years after imposing strict Covid-19 entry protocols.

The country will only allow tourists with fixed itineraries in packaged tours. Individual tourism will not be allowed initially.

Also, Japan will raise its daily international arrival cap to 20,000 to accommodate tourists. Currently, Japan allows up to 10,000 international arrivals per day, a number that includes Japanese citizens, foreign students and business travelers. 

The move more broadly paves the way for international tourism’s restart in the country after it had announced earlier this month that it would do a trial reopening for small group tours of up to 50 people with non-tourist visas from four countries: the U.S., Australia, Thailand and Singapore.
