President Joe Biden has announced plans to relax travel restrictions for travellers entering the US from the UK. The US president is also set to apply the same rules for those entering the country from the European Union (EU) and other global nations. However, only those who have received both doses of an approved Covid vaccine will be able to visit the nation.

When will UK travellers be permitted to enter the US?

President Biden has announced plans to relax the current blanket ban on UK and EU travellers from November.

The specific date the new entry rules will come into force has not yet been announced.

According to Jeff Zients, the White House Coronavirus response coordinator, the change will take place in “early November”.

He said the US has acted “with science as our guide” and is taking an “individual rather than country-based approach”.

The current travel ban has been in place since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.

What are the new entry rules for entering the US from the UK?

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has yet to update its travel advice page for Britons.

However, according to US authorities, passengers will be required to show evidence of having completed a full course of vaccination against COVID-19.

They will also be required to take a Covid test within three days of departure and show proof of a negative result.

Those entering the US will also be subject to contact tracing, with airlines capturing travellers’ names and contact details to be stored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for 30 days.

Mr Zients commented: “That will allow the CDC to follow up if someone around them has tested positive.”

He added: “This applies to all international travel starting early November.

“Beginning in early November foreign nationals flying to the US will be required to be fully vaccinated.

“They must show proof of vaccination prior to boarding a US-bound plane.”

When asked which vaccines will be accepted, the US administration says it will defer to the CDC.

Currently, the US is vaccinating its population with Pfizer, Moderna, and the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

Though AstraZeneca is not yet approved for use in the US, it is not clear whether or not they will accept it as an “approved” vaccine for travellers.

Will fully vaccinated UK travellers be required to self-isolate upon arrival in the US?

According to the US Government, passengers who are fully vaccinated will be able to avoid self-isolation.

However, if they become ill with coronavirus while travelling, they may then be required to quarantine.
