A true cliffhanger – this spacious retreat is set to be built into a cliffside in Iceland.

The jaw-dropping location means the swanky glass apartment would have uninterrupted sea views.

Resembling a Bond villain's lair, the dramatic design features a giant balcony that juts out over the crashing waves below.

Although it is currently just at the design phase, the modern abode would be a unique hotel or holiday apartment for a once-in-a-lifetime trip.

The retreat is set to be built on the Icelandic coast, between the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans.

Designer Alex Hogrefe revealed that the view was his main focus when drawing up the elaborate plans.

On the website visualizingarchitecture.com, he said: "I chose a view that would grab some of the horizon, but also show the cliffs crashing into the water below."

Inside, The Cliff Retreat will be spacious and lights thanks to its expansive windows.

But the impressive views – which can be seen from every room – will be its main draw.

But Alex isn't the only one designing cliffhanging properties.

Holland and Rhodes-based architects OPA have also come up with a unique cliff house design for Greece.

Nestled between the rocks, the ultra-modern apartment includes an infinity pool and floor to ceiling windows, offering a view over the Aegean Sea.

Inside, the roof top pool lets in light, meaning dappled beams can shine through to the living area below.

The bold design, inspired by Casa Malaparte in the Isle of Capri, is currently in the planning stages. But if the Casa Brutale was built it would certainly impress those wealthy enough to stay there.
