According to research from pensions experts Penfold, over 12 percent of over 50s in the UK want to retire abroad. The team looked at the cost of living, the exchange rate and the average flight cost for expats.

Best countries to retire (Penfold)

  1. Croatia
  2. Spain
  3. Ireland
  4. Italy
  5. Greece
  6. France
  7. UAE
  8. Canada
  9. Australia
  10. New Zealand

Croatia was ranked as the best country in the world to retire. The Penfold team said: “The top benefits of moving to Croatia in retirement include the exchange rate, with one British pound equalling just shy of 8.5 Croatia Kronas.”

The cost of living in Croatia is much lower than in the UK, with day to day life almost half the price.

Split is one of the most popular cities for expats in Croatia. The coastal city has it all, with historical sites, stunning beaches and mountains to explore.

One visitor wrote on Tripadvisor: “Beautiful place to visit. So much history, lots of eating places and lots of shops.”

Croatia’s capital city, Zagreb, is the country’s largest city with a population of around 800,000 people.

It’s even cheaper than Split and the cost of living is estimated to be 15 percent lower than the coastal city.

Both cities have an extremely low crime rate, making them safe places for Britons looking for a quiet retirement.

Budget flights to Croatia are available from most major airports in the UK which means retirees will be able to visit family at home easily.

Spain was second on the list and is one of the best countries in the world to retire. The sunny country ranks highly when it comes to happiness.

The majority of retired British expats in Spain choose to settle in the sunny Costa del Sol or Costa Blanca.

Spain is also one of the world’s safest countries with a low crime rate in most of its major cities.

Cheap flight costs make it easy for families to visit retirees in Spain and housing costs are also generally lower than in the UK.
