Nusa Dua, Bali: A Guide to Beachside Luxury and The Mulia

Nusa Dua is Bali's polished resort enclave: its calm beaches, luxury resorts including The Mulia, water sports, nearby Uluwatu and tips on when to go.

On the southern tip of Bali, Nusa Dua is the island's most polished resort area: a gated enclave of luxury hotels, manicured gardens and calm, reef-protected beaches. It's where many travellers come for indulgence – spa days, beach clubs and fine dining – before or after exploring the rest of the island. The Mulia, one of Bali's best-known luxury resorts, sits on its quiet southern stretch. Here's what to know.

Nusa Dua at a glance

  • Where: the south-east of the Bukit Peninsula, southern Bali.
  • From the airport: around 20–30 minutes.
  • Best for: couples, families, honeymooners and anyone wanting calm, safe beaches.
  • Best time: April–October (dry season).

The resorts

1. The Mulia and other luxury stays

The Mulia complex combines three properties of different styles – an all-suite hotel, a larger resort and private pool villas – with a long stretch of beach, a vast oceanfront pool area, several restaurants and an extensive spa. It's typical of Nusa Dua's big, service-focused resorts, along with international brands such as The St. Regis, The Ritz-Carlton and Sofitel. Things to do

2. Beaches and water sports

Reefs offshore keep the water calm at many beaches. Geger Beach is a good public beach; nearby Tanjung Benoa is Bali's water-sports hub, with parasailing, jet skis and glass-bottom boats.

3. Water Blow and the Peninsula Island

At the Water Blow, waves crash through limestone channels and spray high into the air – most dramatic at high tide. Walk over to the small Peninsula Island for views.

4. Uluwatu

About 30 minutes away, Uluwatu Temple clings to a clifftop; watch the Kecak fire dance at sunset. The cliffs below have famous surf breaks and beach clubs.

5. Further afield

Day trips go to Ubud for rice terraces, temples and craft villages, and to the island of Nusa Penida for dramatic cliffs and manta-ray snorkelling (by boat from Sanur).

Tips

  • Traffic: Bali's roads are congested – leave plenty of time for day trips.
  • Respect temples: wear a sarong and sash, and dress modestly.
  • Money: the Indonesian rupiah; cards are widely accepted in resorts.
