Top factors when booking a staycation – including affordable accommodation

The top considerations for parents when picking a staycation destination for a UK holiday include affordable accommodation options (48%), and free or cheap days out (44%), according to research.

Nearly half of mums and dads (47%), who are trying to plan a holiday on home soil with kids aged 18 or under, look for a good mix of restaurants and cafes.

And 45%, of the 2,000 parents polled, would rule out anywhere that doesn't have access to the beach or a pool within a 10-mile radius.

The survey also revealed the top staycation spots for families this summer – with Cornwall topping the list, followed by the Lake District and Devon.

The same places were voted the top three in terms of value for money – although the Lake District beat Cornwall to the top spot.

And when it comes to activities and attractions, London, Bath, and Manchester were ranked the top three best places to visit.

The research, commissioned by Premier Inn, also found that 53% of those polled now go on more staycations than holidays abroad.

Following the findings, the hotel group has created a new map to help you find the most exciting attractions at a convenient half-way point when meeting friends and family, in a bid to make the school summer holidays easier.

A spokesman for Premier Inn said: “With so many amazing places to visit in the UK this summer, we're happy to give parents some inspiration ahead of the upcoming school holidays.

“It can be hard choosing the right places that are suitable for everyone, which is why it’s great that a lot of these places are just a car journey away.

“Not only do staycations promote relaxation and rejuvenation, but they also empower us to support our local communities, and appreciate the wonders that lie just beyond our own front doors.

“So, let's embark on a journey of exploration, right where we are, and unlock the glorious sights of our home sweet home.”

It also emerged that 68% of parents try to find educational places to visit, that their children will enjoy and find interesting.

And two-thirds of those polled, via OnePoll.com, claimed free days out in the place they are visiting is a decision-maker when it comes to planning their staycation.

However, parents will also spend an average of £142 on a typical day out, whether it’s to the beach or on attractions.

The spokesman for Premier Inn added: “As we embrace the essence of home and the beauty it holds, we proudly advocate for the magic of staycations.

“In a world that moves at lightning speed, staycations offer a serene escape right at our doorstep, allowing us to rediscover the treasures within our own backyard.

“It's a chance to rekindle our connection with loved ones, savour precious moments together, and create lasting memories in the comfort of familiar surroundings.”
