Bonnie Tyler checks into our travel Q&A

This week singer Bonnie Tyler checks into our travel Q&A.

She talks about her earliest holiday memory, her guilty travel pleasure, her favourite part of Wales – and more.

DO YOU MISS TRAVELLING?

I flew to my holiday home in Portugal last March for a week, then lockdown came and I’ve been in the Algarve ever since.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT PORTUGAL?

The mild climate, the people and the food — I love a pastel de nata [custard tart] and bacalhau a bras [fish and chips].

HOW’S YOUR PORTUGUESE?

Don’t ask. I took an online course, but I’m afraid I’m struggling.

EARLIEST HOLIDAY MEMORY?

Going to Porthcawl in Wales. I went paddling, even though I couldn’t swim.

FIRST TRIP ABROAD?

A package holiday in Alicante with my boyfriend Robert before we got married. We hired scooters and had a great time, even though I burnt my legs sunbathing.

HOW HAS TOURING CHANGED?

A lot. I started out doing 45-minute spots between the bingo and the chicken in a basket in Welsh clubs. But nowadays I fly all over the world touring.

WHAT DO YOU MISS ABOUT TOURING?

Everything. I had to cancel more than 80 concerts around the world. As soon as it’s allowed, I’ll be back on that stage.

FAVOURITE PART OF WALES?

The Gower coast, where I live. The scenery is sensational and it’s made for walking.

Bonnie said her favourite part of Wales is the Gower coast. Pictured is the area’s Three Cliffs Bay

TRAVEL ESSENTIAL?

A moisturising spray to keep my face hydrated on plane journeys.

GUILTY TRAVEL PLEASURE?

I like a glass of red wine when I fly but I never drink before going on stage.

ANY FAMOUS TRAVEL ENCOUNTERS?

I once found myself a seat away from Mariah Carey on a flight from New York. I’d heard stories she was a diva but she was lovely. We chatted over a glass of bubbly.

  • Bonnie’s new album, The Best Is Yet To Come, is out on February 26.
