Don’t trust everything you see online when it comes to stunning vacation spots as this fleet of TikTokers reveal.

Dozens of clips follow the ‘expectation vs reality’ theme, with holidaymakers showcasing footage of what they hoped to see when they got to their destination compared with the disappointing scene that greeted them. 

Among the most startling contrasts is a clip posted by photographer and writer Emily Byrski, following her trip to Rainbow Mountain in Peru.

Her expectation, she reveals, was of a vibrant peak and blue skies but instead she was greeted by snow and sleet, and said she ‘almost died’ due to the lack of oxygen at high altitude.

Cristina Laura was hoping for a quiet time in Venice, but instead she found the narrow streets were jampacked with tourists 

Julia Natalie posed on a swing in the sea while in Egypt. While it looks very peaceful in her shot, she reveals behind the scenes there were hoards of people waiting to get the same images 

Oana’s clip of Santorini imagines quiet whitewashed streets winding down the hillside. However, her TikTok shows that there were queues of people waiting to take the same shots 

In the clip, she looks decidedly miserable as she surveys the gloomy slopes around her.

Later she is seen using an oxygen cannister, so she can get her breath back.

Other TikTokers posted similar clips showing them being underwhelmed by areas of natural beauty.

TikToker @randomanna1 visited the pink lakes on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. While she was expecting rose-hued waters the lake appeared more of a muddy color on her visit. 

She said: ‘I was kinda disappointed but it was beautiful anyway.’

Jordyn Sleek was also expecting powdery white sands when she visited the beaches along Highway 30A on the Gulf Coast of Florida in July. 

But due to the time of year she visited, the coastline was carpeted with mounds of green seaweed.

Boasting natural and manmade thermal pools, Grutas de Tolantongo in Mexico draws hundreds and thousands of visitors a year for its beauty, with pictures online showcasing its piercing blue waters and pristine surroundings. 

However, @farfarwego’s ‘reality’ video shows a more depressing scene, with trash on the pathways and some of the pools drained of water.

Overcrowded places are another gripe with the traveling TikTokers.  

Cristina Laura revealed in her ‘expectation vs reality’ TikTok that she was hoping for a quiet time in Venice when she visited in March 2022.

One clip shows influencers Dan and Alex kissing in front of the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign with no one else around. But then the camera pulls back to show a line of people waiting

While her video makes it look like she is the only person at the picturesque location, her TikTok cuts to show more than a dozen people lining up to get the same ‘idyllic’ shot. 

Influencers Dan and Alex witnessed a similar scene when they visited Las Vegas.

One clip shows the couple kissing in front of the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign with no one else seemingly around.

But then the camera pulls back to show a line of people waiting to strike their own pose in front of the iconic landmark.

Some travelers revealed that the biggest thing that didn’t live up to expectation on their trips was the weather.
