Gorgeous town has ‘best value Christmas markets’ – wine costs £2 a glass

Krakow: Aerial views show Poland’s second-largest city

One of Poland’s main cities has been tipped as a good value destination thanks to its budget-friendly offerings, including a great Christmas market.

Krakow was ranked 9th in the 2023 Post Office Travel Money Christmas Markets Barometer and for a good reason.

According to the Mirror, low-cost flights and reasonably priced accommodation in Krakow will only set you back £756.

The savings increase when you factor in the city’s inexpensive food and drink offerings, with mulled wine costing just £2 a glass.

Krakow’s Christmas market has also been named Europe’s best in a recent ranking compiled by Christmas Tree World, the UK’s largest seller of Christmas trees.

Criteria such as social media popularity on Instagram and TikTok, Google search frequency, and affordability of local accommodation were taken into account in the ranking.

This historical city’s Christmas market emerged as the leader, boasting an impressive 4.3 million views on TikTok and securing the highest total score of 7.84 out of 10.

Christmas Tree World praised Krakow’s market as having one of the most picturesque settings for a Christmas market.

Commencing on November 24 and spanning 33 days, the market is situated on the medieval market square within Kraków’s UNESCO-listed old town.

“As Poland is a country of meat lovers, Krakow’s market offers some of the best meat quality around, with seasoned grilled sausages sourced from local farms, as well as hearty and warm soups to keep you warm in Poland’s chilly conditions,” stated the report.

Nestled in and around Krakow’s expansive Main Square, known as “Rynek Główny” in Polish, the Krakow Christmas market is a sight to behold.

The Main Square, one of the largest medieval squares in Europe, serves as the enchanting backdrop for this festive gathering.

The market’s setting is truly picturesque, featuring the magnificent twin-towered basilica of St Mary’s amid the array of Christmas market stalls.

Dominating the square’s center is the Cloth Hall, known as “Sukiennice” in Polish, a historic structure with significant cultural and commercial importance.

The Cloth Hall in Krakow is renowned as a prime destination for souvenirs throughout the year, and the Christmas season is no exception.

The market’s vibrant atmosphere, set against the backdrop of the sprawling Main Square, creates an unforgettable experience for visitors, making Krakow’s Christmas market a must-visit destination during the holiday season.
