Flight attendant shares popular hot drink you ‘should never order’

Flight attendant Deja shared on her TikTok channel @i.amdejaa the drinks passengers should never order on the plane. “When you are travelling on an aeroplane please don’t drink coffee or tea,” she said, but travellers should not only avoid those two beverages but also hot chocolate as it is made with the same hot water.

The flight attendant claimed that the “water tanks on the aeroplane are never cleaned, and they are very disgusting”.

Instead, she suggested passengers “go to Starbucks and get some free water” and make their own drink.

A good technique to have delicious hot drinks on board is by getting your own hot water before the flight and passengers can do so at the terminal after going through security.

Holidaymakers can go to any coffee shop or restaurant in the airport, such as Starbucks, and ask for hot water, which will be provided for free.

Hot chocolate is a very popular beverage and travellers often order the drink with a chocolate bar or muffin.

Many airlines like easyJet have hot chocolate and pastry deals and Virgin’s hot chocolate is “the most popular item that we’ve ever introduced on board”, especially among women.

A spokesperson explained: “There is a clear divide between men and women. While men will often choose tea or coffee, as soon as women see hot chocolate, they all opt for that.”

Flight attendant Cierra explained on her TikTok channel @cierra_mistt that “unless we are super desperate, we will not drink the coffee or tea that’s supplied on the plane”.

“The water that we use for the coffee and the tea comes from the same water tank and guess what, it never gets cleaned.

“Although airlines may tell passengers they do ‘regular’ water tests, we are told that it’s about six to nine months for one test on one plane to happen.

“And they are not going to clean up that tank unless they find something!” she claimed.

American flight attendant Kat Kamalani agreed and said in a TikTok video that most crew members don’t drink hot beverages such as hot chocolate or coffee.

She explained: “Rule number one, never consume any liquid that is not in a can or a bottle.”

The Hunter College NYC Food Policy Center at the City University of New York and DietDetective.com conducted a study on airline water and revealed that “many airlines have possibly provided passengers with unhealthy water”.

After analysing the Environmental Protection Agency’s standards for water safety on 11 major international airlines, they determined that the majority had poor water quality.

According to the 2004 EPA sample of 158 planes, a total of 13 percent had the bacteria coliform in their water and E.coli was found in the water tanks of some planes.

“Water on board is regulated under the Environmental Protection Agency to ensure safe drinking water on the aircraft.

“The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA pushed for this regulation over 15 years ago. The regulation gives broad discretion to airlines on how often they must test the water and flush the tanks. AFA does not believe this regulation goes far enough or is sufficiently enforced,” the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA told Insider.
