Tripadvisor’s Travellers’ Choice 2022 destinations name some of the world’s best holiday locations every year. In this year’s sun seekers category, one Greek island made the top 10.

The sun seekers category of the Travellers’ Choice awards looks at the best beach destinations in the world.

While Cancun in Mexico took the top spot, the Greek island of Crete squeezed its way into the top three.

The largest Greek island, Crete has plenty to offer British holidaymakers looking for a break in the sun.

An important site in Greek mythology, king of the gods, Zeus, is said to have been born on the sunny island.

The Minotaur’s labyrinth is also said to have been built on the island underneath the castle.

One of the island’s most beautiful beaches is Elafonissi, known for its gorgeous pink sand coastline.

One Tripadvisor reviewer said: “The pink sand beach is one of the most beautiful in Crete. Just go there, you won’t regret it.”

Another said: “Wow, this is the best beach I have visited in Europe, clean, safe and the water is so inviting.”

The magical beach is about a mile long and has many small coves including some naturist spots.

Another of Crete’s top rated beaches is the stunning Balos Lagoon which attracts many tourists every year.

Although the beach is stunningly beautiful, access is tricky and it is not advised for tourists who are afraid of heights.

However, after a nerve wracking drive and walk to the beach, visitors are rewarded with crystal clear waters and incredible views.

Tourists who want to escape the crowds could visit Potamos beach, a stunning spot near Malia.

The family friendly beach has a restaurant and is the perfect place for snorkelling or swimming.

Away from Crete’s beaches tourists can see incredible treasures at the Heraklion Archaeological Museum.

From mosaics to jewellery and weapons, the museum has an astounding array of ancient artefacts.
