Some photographs can leave you awestruck.

That’s certainly the case with the winning images from the One Eyeland Awards 2022, a photo contest that endeavours to recognise ‘exceptional photography from around the globe’.

Based in India, the photo-sharing site One Eyeland was founded by photographer Sharad Haksar in 2008. For its awards, a jury of 29 ‘esteemed artists’ was tasked with choosing the overall winners from over 3,600 images from 54 countries.

A heartwarming picture of a sleeping baby chimpanzee, an epic shot of a colony of penguins dwarfed by a giant iceberg, and a mesmerising image of a pair of elephants crossing an African plain are among the pictures to garner acclaim.

However, it’s the work of Thai photographer Jatenipat Jkboy Ketpradit that truly won the jury over, earning him the title of Photographer of the Year.

This incredible shot shows a brown bear ‘dwarfed by the immense beauty of Katmai’, a volcano in southern Alaska. Titled ‘Mists of Time’, it’s from a series by British photographer Harry Skeggs, which receives the silver award in the ‘Nature – Wildlife’ category 

This magnificent shot – a second image from Harry Skeggs’ prize-winning portfolio – shows a ‘colossal’ iceberg in Antarctica looming over a colony of penguins. Skeggs notes that the deep crack in the iceberg ‘looks set to hurtle tonnes of ice on top of them’ 

Spanish photographer Xavier Ortega captured this ‘tender’ scene of a sleeping baby chimpanzee while walking through the forests of Mahale Mountains National Park in western Tanzania. It’s part of a series that takes the silver award in the ‘Nature – Wildlife’ category 

This shot from Xavier Ortega’s prize-winning series shows elephants on the plains of the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya, ‘where the sunsets and sunrises are spectacular’

Italian photographer Valerio Sbriglione snared this otherwordly mountain scene. Though it was captured in Europe, he notes that it reminds him of J. R. R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth. It’s part of a larger series that takes the bronze award in the ‘Nature – Landscapes’ category 

U.S photographer Cheyne Walls captured this breathtaking shot of a ‘very unique’ Japanese maple tree. She says that she took the shot on a day when ‘Mother Nature was at her best’. Walls notes: ‘The scene came alive when the sun briefly appeared… it was as if the tree was on fire.’ The image is one of a series that takes the bronze award in the ‘Nature – Trees’ category

This is one of the images that has earned photographer Stue Rees the title of Photographer of the Year for New Zealand. Titled ‘Do Not Disturb Me at Lunchtime’, it shows an Alaskan brown bear feeding on salmon. It’s part of a series that takes the bronze award in the ‘Nature – Wildlife’ category

This mesmerising picture by Stue Rees shows a storm rolling over the Southern Alps mountain range on New Zealand’s South Island. It belongs to a wider series that’s a finalist in the ‘Nature – Landscapes’ category  

This incredible shot of a lenticular cloud over 6,200ft-tall Mount Yotei, a stratovolcano in Japan’s Shikotsu-Toya National Park, is the work of photographer Yuusei Nagahata. The amateur photographer notes that it was ‘a fantastic sight’. Nagahata’s work takes the bronze award in the ‘Nature – Landscapes’ category 

This vibrant shot shows 200-year-old ficus trees on the tiny Australian isle of Norfolk Island in South Pacific. Captured by the Australian photographer Stuart Chape, it’s part of a wider portfolio that takes the bronze award in the ‘Nature – Trees’ category

Mist coats the landscape around Jamnik, a small village in northern Slovenia, in this enchanting photograph. It’s from a photo series by Polish photographer Jaskula Jan, which takes the bronze award in the ‘Fine Art – Landscape’ category 

This astonishing picture of Seceda, a mountain in Italy’s Dolomites, is one of the images that has earned Jatenipat Jkboy Ketpradit the title of Photographer of the Year. It’s part of a wider series titled ‘Mountains of the World’, which the photographer captured over a period of 10 years. The series takes the silver medal in the ‘Nature – Landscapes’ category
