It's something that we haven't all done before, but one bad train delay, traffic accident or misread ticket could result in it.
Generally when we don't get to board our flight it's because the journey has been cancelled – but for some it's because they've arrived too late to the boarding gate.
It's not the airline's fault you didn't catch your flight, which makes the whole process of getting a new one, a refund or another route to your destination much, much harder.

If your flight is cancelled then your rights mean that you may be due a replacement flight, compensation, or even a hotel for the night.
Sadly, if it's because of your actions – even if there was something outside of your control – then these avenues aren't available to you.
Even your travel insurance may not pay out depending on the reason you missed your plane. Though it's always worth giving them a call to see if there's anything they can do to help.
Air Passenger Rights Lawyer and founder of Air Advisor, Anton Radchenko explained what you can do if you have missed your flight. You might not get all of your money back – but it may get you some which could help towards another journey.
Know your rights if you’re a no-show
Anton said: "Travelling can be a stressful experience and sometimes things can crop up and prevent you from making your flight, from traffic and transport issues to misreading flight schedules you could end up being a no-show. A no-show is when you fail to turn up for check-in before your boarding gate is closed.
"Gate closure times can differ depending on if your flight is domestic or international, for example, international flights usually close the gates one hour before the scheduled departure time and for domestic flights, it’s around 30-45 minutes."
He added: "However, what many travellers might not know is that despite not boarding your flight you still have certain rights, this includes the ability to reclaim taxes and airport fees that are included in your ticket price but not used as these are not part of your airfare and are collected by airlines on behalf of passengers for other services such as airport usage, security, and other services.
"It’s important for passengers to be aware of their rights when it comes to being marked as a 'no-show' and understand they still have the right to claim even if it’s to recover a portion of their ticket price for services they did not use.
"Remember to always check the boarding gate closing times with the airline you’re flying with as these may vary and although you can claim who wants to miss out on their travels?"
