Travel to Spain, France, Portugal and Greece is a little different in the post-coronavirus world, with governments around the world imposing their own rules and restrictions for international arrivals. On Monday, the latest traffic light travel rules from the UK Government came into force.

The rules for jetting off to each nation vary, and it is important British holidaymakers are aware of the latest specifications before departure.

Here are the latest travel rules for Spain, France, Portugal and Greece since the August 30 update.

What are the latest travel rules for Spain?

Spain and its archipelagos, the Balearic and Canary Islands, are all currently on the UK’s amber list for travel.

This means fully-vaccinated travellers arriving into the UK from these countries are exempt from self-isolation. They must, however, take a coronavirus test within the 72 hours prior to travel.

Vaccinated travellers must also pre-book and pay for a day two PCR test. The details of this test should be included on each individual person’s passenger locator form filled out before departure.

Unvaccinated arrivals must self-isolate for 10 days on their return to the UK. They must also take a pre-departure test, as well as book and pay for a day two and day eight test to be taken during their quarantine.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) provides helpful information for those travelling to Spain.

The FCDO explains: “The Spanish government requires all arrivals to Spain from the UK to present on entry a pre-travel declaration form and one of the following: a negative COVID-19 test; or proof of vaccination.”

Those using a negative coronavirus test for entry must ensure this test was taken within 72 hours prior to arrival in Spain.

What are the latest travel rules for France?

France is currently on the UK’s amber list for travel.

Fully-vaccinated travellers returning to the UK from France do not face self-isolation. However, they must take a pre-departure test within the 72 hours prior to travel.

They must also pre-book and pay for a day two PCR test, the details of which must be included on their passenger locator form.

Each traveller must fill out a passenger locator form before travelling.

Unvaccinated passengers remain subject to 10 days of mandatory self-isolation on their return to the UK.

They must also take a pre-departure test, as well as a day two and day eight PCR test during their quarantine period.

According to the FCDO: “The UK is currently on the French amber list. Entry requirements are different depending on whether you are fully vaccinated or not.

“Unvaccinated (or not fully vaccinated) arrivals in France from countries on the French amber list will only be permitted to travel for essential reasons. If you are not fully vaccinated, you will need to have an essential reason to travel from France to a country on France’s amber list.

“Travellers who are not fully vaccinated will need to self-isolate for 7 days after arrival, then take another PCR test following this period of self-isolation.”

It continues: “Travellers who are fully vaccinated do not need an essential reason to travel to France and do not need to self-isolate on arrival. From 18 July, fully vaccinated adults no longer need to present evidence of a negative test result before travel.”

France will accept the NHS Covid pass for travel.

What are the latest travel rules for Portugal?

Although mainland Portugal is currently on the UK’s amber list, Madeira and the Azores are now on the green list.

Those travelling to the UK from mainland Portugal are exempt from quarantine if they are fully vaccinated.

Unvaccinated arrivals must quarantine for 10 days at home.

All travellers must take a pre-departure Covid test in the 72 hours before travel, and pre-book and pay for a day two PCR test.

Unvaccinated arrivals must also pre-book and pay for a day eight PCR test to be taken during quarantine.

However, both vaccinated and unvaccinated travellers returning to the UK from Madeira and the Azores are exempt from quarantine.

All arrivals must take a pre-departure and day two PCR test.

For those heading to Portugal, the FCDO explains: “You will be asked to show a negative test certificate and/or COVID vaccination certificate and your passenger locator form when you check-in for your flight to mainland Portugal.”

For those travelling to Madeira and the Azores, the rules are slightly different.

All travellers visiting Madeira, with the exception of children aged 11 and under, must complete and submit a traveller questionnaire.

They must also download the NHS COVID-19 vaccination certificate, or EU digital COVID-19 vaccination certificate, showing proof of being fully vaccinated 14 days or more prior to travel.

Travellers should also take a PCR test 72 hours before departure and upload the negative test result to their traveller questionnaire.

For those jetting off to the Azores, travellers must take a PCR test within 72 hours of departure and upload their negative test result to their passenger questionnaire.

This applies to all passengers aged 12 and above.

Passengers may be subject to a health screening upon arrival.

What are the latest travel rules for Greece?

Greece is currently on the UK’s amber list for travel.

This means vaccinated travellers arriving in the UK from Greece do not need to self-isolate if they can provide their inoculation status.

They will have to take a pre-departure coronavirus test, as well as pre-book and pay for a day two PCR test.

Unvaccinated travellers still face 10 days of mandatory self-isolation upon their arrival in the UK from Greece. They must take a pre-departure coronavirus test and a day two PCR test, as well as a further PCR test on day eight of their quarantine.

Greece is currently allowing vaccinated travellers to enter from the UK without quarantine.

Unvaccinated travellers are also welcome without quarantine as long as they can provide either proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken within the 72 hours before travel or proof of recovery from COVID-19 for entry purposes.

The FCDO explains: “Evidence of a positive COVID-19 PCR test result taken between 30 to 180 days of your travel dates can be used and can be demonstrated via the NHS COVID Pass.”

Travellers must also complete a passenger locator form before jetting off to Greece.
