Spain has one of Europe’s prettiest winter cities

Already feeling ready for Christmas? A mini-break in one of Europe’s most festive cities might be the perfect way to celebrate.

But while destinations such as Strasbourg and Copenhagen might appear to be the best choices for a Christmas break, one of Europe’s prettiest winter destinations is actually in southern Spain.

Malaga, the capital of Spain’s sunny Costa del Sol, is one of the continent’s best destinations for Brits looking to get in the festive spirit.

The Spanish city is home to one of the world’s best Christmas Light displays on one of its central streets.

This year, the Calle Larios features 16 celestial angels in a breathtaking light display that runs the full length of the pedestrianised street.

During the evening, there are several light and music shows which take place at 6:45pm, 8pm and 10pm.

The street is generally packed during the evening show so make sure to get there early to secure a good spot. The show runs for around eight minutes.

3D images will be projected onto Malaga’s iconic Cathedral in an event sure to delight children and adults alike.

Malaga’s Botanical Gardens are also lit up with a pretty festive display with ticket prices starting from 9.50 euros (£8.14).

While Malaga usually has a Christmas market, tourists can also visit nearby markets in towns such as Fuengirola and Benalmadena. As both towns have sizeable expat communities, there are often many Christmas activities.

It wouldn’t be Christmas without a sweet treat and there are a few delicacies not to be missed in Malaga. Try pestinos, a fried dough treat often soaked in wine.
