The Duchess of Cambridge is no stranger to travelling abroad, frequently doing so as part of her duty as a member of the Royal Family. Yet, in doing so, she must be sure to follow a number of protocols.
Renowned for her seemingly effortless glamour and fashion-forward ensembles, Kate is often pictured stepping off aeroplanes in an array of high-end outfits.
However, according to a royal expert, this is actually something which is expected of the mother-of-three.
While typical travellers may opt for a comfortable tracksuit or a casual T-shirt and jeans, this is reportedly not an option for Kate.
Speaking to Express.co.uk, Anne Chertoff, Chief Operating Officer at New York-based Beautmont Etiquette, which currently runs a specialist online royal-themed etiquette course, explained her outfit choices can actually be seen as a mark of “respect”.
“When members of the Royal Family are on an official state trip on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II they are working, just as anyone else on a business trip,” pointed out Ms Chertoff.
“It’s appropriate for them to dress well to show respect to the people they are meeting with.”
This is also why the monarchy opt for “elevated” clothing when travelling.
It is not uncommon to see Kate stepping off an aircraft in a dress, heels, a blazer and sometimes even a hat.

Meanwhile, her husband Prince William tends to wear suits.
“When members of the Royal Family disembark on an official trip they are greeted by official representatives from the nation’s government, along with the international press. These are official events,” continued Ms Chertoff.
However, behind closed doors, things may be a little different.
“They may wear more relaxed clothing for long flights, but when exiting a plane they’re dressed in a suit or dress,” Ms Chertoff said.
When the Royal Family members travel for leisure purposes, it is also likely they do not follow such strict rules.
“On personal trips for a vacation where they do not expect to be greeted by dignitaries at the airport or press they are more likely to dress in more casual attire,” the expert pointed out.
Yet these fashion rules do not single out the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
It is likely the same formalities are applicable from the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall right through to Queen Elizabeth II herself.
Furthermore, even the younger members of the family are often seen dressed in smart clothing when travelling.
In the past, Prince George and Princess Charlotte have been pictured wearing coordinating colours for travel, such as burgundy and blue on a flight during the family’s Canada tour in 2016.
Princess Charlotte often wears a dress and cardigan.
Meanwhile, Prince George has been seen wearing smart shorts, shirts and knee-high socks as he exits planes on royal tours.
Though Prince Louis has not yet attended a royal tour, will also likely face the same protocols as his older siblings.
