‘I asked a mum to calm her child down during our flight – but she snapped at me’

Lots of things can be annoying when flying – from people stealing your seat to clipping their toenails next to you.

Flight attendants particularly dislike it when holidaymakers get very drunk on planes, but they don’t mind when babies cry.

However, there’s been a spate of passengers complaining online recently about their flights.

Crying babies, screaming children and even one loud teenager have all earned ire online.

But, the most recent post on Reddit is from a mum who explained a woman told her to “mind her business” as her child started “stomping and screaming”.

Apparently, the little one’s mum did little to intervene – and she was worried she’d overstepped by commenting on the behaviour.

She said: "I (21 F) was flying on a plane from Texas to LA for a job and was sitting next to this mom in her late 20s with a child who looked to be about 3-4 years old.

"We sat in an aisle seat while the mom sat at the window seat, her child in the middle and I was sitting on the edge.

"About 20 minutes into the flight her child started standing up on the seat and stomping while mildly screaming.

"All this while the moms nose was in her phone the whole time."

Then, the woman noted that she tried to subtly call the mother’s attention to the issue by making pointed eye contact.

However, the mum never looked up from her phone.

She continued: "I thought maybe after like 10 mins the child would get tired and sit, low and behold, the child didn’t.

"I tapped the mom on her shoulder and told her that she should watch her child and tell him to sit down.

"She gave me a dirty look and told me to mind my own business."

It can be dangerous if children are not being watched on planes – if turbulence hits they make be injured without a seatbelt.

So, we’re not surprised by the woman’s annoyance and it sparked a big reaction online too.

One person said: "I feel for the parents that are trying to calm down their kid but I have no time for someone playing on the phone rather than trying to calm a kid down."

Another said: "I have a three-year-old and that's just not acceptable. Not to mention, if you hit turbulence that kid is going to get a head injury."

While a third added: “It's a plane with other people on it, if someone can't handle being asked to quiet their child down after getting on a flight and letting their kid behave like that, they shouldn't get on the plane.”

Another noted: ‘This a safety issue and should be directed to the flight attendant. The child needs to be seated and belted in.”

But, one commented: “I've seen people interpret a lot of different types of behavior as ‘standing up in the seat, stomping, and mildly screaming’.

“As in, some people get upset when a kid stands and is slightly louder than a bookworm. Dunno where you fall on this spectrum, and that might change my judgement.”
