Greece, like the majority of nations around the world, is grappling with its own battle against COVID-19. However, as many Britons look toward holidays, the popular destination could end up on the Government’s “green” travel list if it is deemed a “safe” option.
Should holidaymakers flock to Greece in the future, they will be required to follow the coronavirus restrictions in place across the nation.
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) frequently updates its travel advice pages for Britons currently in the country, as well as those looking to jet off in the future.
On April 13, a “full editorial review” of Greece’s coronavirus advice for travellers was updated by the FCDO.
In the latest update, the FCDO explained: “All restrictions remain under regular review. In Regional Units where the spread of COVID-19 is particularly high and hospital capacity is limited, restrictions may be tighter or re-imposed with limited notice.”
Though the FCDO assures it offers the “most relevant measures to travellers”, anyone jetting off to the nation in the future is advised to follow “local announcements” from regional authorities.
There are a number of rules in place, though these vary across regions.
Some of the most common include the use of facemasks, limits on the number of people allowed in social settings, a curfew and a ban on travel.
“You must use a facemask in all indoor and outdoor public and communal spaces, including work-places and on public transport,” states the FCDO.
“Retail stores, except for shopping malls, are open for ‘click-away’ and ‘click-in-shop’ by appointment.

“Individuals are only allowed to shop for three hours a day, and must book an appointment for ‘click-in-shop’ purchases.”
Appointments can be made via a special SMS service.
It continues: “Restricted numbers are in place for churches and religious service.”
There are also a number of restrictions impacting travel within the country.
“A curfew is in place from 9pm to 5am,” explains the travel authority.
“You must have certification of any essential movements.
“A ban on travel between regional units of Greece, except for essential reasons (ie. returning to your residence or accommodation address; for family reunification reasons; for health emergencies; for essential business reasons- in which case your employer must provide you with certification that your travel is essential).
“A maximum of three persons are permitted to travel in a taxi or a private vehicle unless all members of the same family.”
Those who are permitted to travel, via any public method, must wear a face mask.
“If you are travelling via ferry, you will need to complete a health questionnaire and hand it to the ferry operator before boarding,” continues the FCDO.
“The necessary forms will be provided by the operator: you should contact them directly if you need further information. Temperature checks may also be carried out before boarding.
“If you are travelling by internal flights, specific measures relating to check-in, baggage allowances and other details are in place to reduce the spread of coronavirus. You should check with your operator directly for further detail.”
Hotels and other types of accommodation are allowed to open, however, the FCDO warns many have chosen to “reduce their offering” and “close during the winter months” in light of many of the COVID-19 measures in place in the country.
Any Britons currently in Greece who need to return to the UK are required to follow all of the current entry requirements including a pre-departure test and self-isolation upon arrival home.
“You are responsible for organising your own COVID-19 test, in line with UK government testing requirements,” states the FCDO.
