Heatwaves are becoming more common and this year they’ve pushed some travellers to change their holiday plans. Some European destinations have seen temperatures soar above 40C.

The rising temperatures could have an impact with tourists choosing cooler destinations or opting to holiday outside peak season.

Clauda Gualdi, travel intelligence data team lead at Riskline, told Express.co.uk how heatwaves could impact holiday choices for Britons.

She said: “Recent data indicates that countries within Southeastern Europe such as Italy, Greece and Spain are the areas that have been most affected by heatwaves. Sadly, this trend is likely to continue.

“These areas are being exposed to temperatures exceeding 40C earlier and earlier every year. Extreme heat is also increasingly affecting the US and China, among other popular tourist destinations.”

Claudia believes travellers could turn away from popular spots as extreme temperatures could put them off visiting.

She said: “The weather has always been one of the criteria taken into consideration by travellers when choosing a summer destination, but current hot temperatures will play a greater role in travel plans.

“Northern areas of France or Spain, as well as Scandinavian countries, may become more popular in future summer plans. While it’s clear that, for now, tourists won’t stop booking trips to European capitals despite the hot temperatures, more travellers are opting for off-season tourism and choosing to enjoy bike-friendly rides in Nordic cities of Copenhagen, historic sites and Norwegian fjords and hiking trails in Iceland, which are all appealing alternatives to enjoy milder temperatures.”

However, she added: “I live in Athens and I’ve been dealing with extreme hot temperatures in the past weeks, which even forced authorities to limit visits to the Acropolis and other archaeological sites.

“But, for instance, I escaped the city heat by booking last-minute trips to nearby islands or villages by the sea. Despite the predictions we make today, it’s also true that weather still varies with short notice.

“Checking weather forecasts before planning a trip might still encourage travellers to leave at the last minute for their bucket list’s top destinations, or even to choose a place they had not considered before.”

• Check local weather frequently
• Buy travel insurance to protect yourself in case of flight cancellations
• Alternate beach days and city sights with indoor air conditioned activities
• Embrace ‘slow travel’ approach and be gentle with your schedule
• Stay hydrated
