Experts at Skips & Bins looked at the best staycation destinations the UK has to offer this summer considering activities, places to eat and drink, and location, as well as how safe the area is to visit. Their top picks for coastal towns were Tenby, in Wales, followed by Port Isaac, in Cornwall, and the beautiful Robin Hood’s Bay, in North Yorkshire.
Tenby, Wales
The small fishing village of Tenby, on the south Pembrokeshire coast, is “the perfect place to spend a staycation in Wales,” the experts commented.
Tenby is just 50 miles away from the vibrant city of Swansea, which has lots of history and entertainment to offer.
The best places to eat and drink in Tenby are Fuchsia, Heywood Bar & Grill and Indie Burger, the travel gurus recommended.
“Tenby is home to many independent local restaurants, whether you are looking for breakfast, a light lunch or an evening meal,” they added.
In terms of activities and places of interest, Tenby can be explored by foot, and the beautiful harbour and beaches as well as the Pembrokeshire Coast Path and Caldey Island, are a must-see.
On Tripadvisor, holidaymaker Bill commented that Tenby’s coast is “stunning” and the town has a “beautiful and unusual beach”.
“Accessed from the arched entrance at the harbor, the entrance opens up to a gorgeous wind-swept sand beach. At times enclosed from the other beaches of Tenby, castle beach is a beautiful walk,” he explained.
Another visitor named Lisa suggested: “Visit Tenby, you don’t know what you’re missing.

“Beautiful beach lovely walk, can see for miles the golden sand. Plenty of cafes on the beach to get drinks and food, parking right by the beach and toilets too,” she explained.
Port Isaac, Cornwall
In second place is the small fishing village of Port Isaac, in North Cornwall. “The village is beautiful, as it blends tourism with local charm, places to eat and drink and a small but fabulous, working harbour,” the experts explained.
Tourists can visit Nathan Outlaw’s Michelin Starred Outlaw’s New Road for food, a “stunning eatery” offering wonderful seafood.
“Book up though, this place is extremely popular,” the travel experts warned.
Port Isaac has a beautiful and peaceful beach and a small harbour with lots of bars and restaurants, which are the main attractions of the small coastal town.
Robin Hood’s Bay, North Yorkshire
Robin Hood’s Bay is “a picturesque small fishing village on the North Yorkshire coast” with a “unique layout” that makes it a must-visit location with plenty of B&Bs, hotels and holiday parks in the local area.
To eat and drink, holidaymakers can visit Brambles Bistro for British cuisine, or Smuggler’s Ale House for local real ales, and won’t be disappointed.
Visitors can walk on the beach, visit the small art galleries and museums or take a day trip to Whitby for the famous Abbey ruins.
Windermere, The Lake District
Cumbria’s breathtaking Lake District also featured in this year’s best places for a staycation as it is “the perfect location for thrill-seekers, walkers and foodies alike, and it offers some of the best the region has to offer”.
Both Windermere and the town of Bowness have a lot of places to eat and drink with the most iconic pubs being the Flying Pig and the Angel Inn, and The Westmorland Inn, a true hidden gem.
One of the most popular attractions is the World of Beatrix Potter museum for fans of Peter Rabbit, perfect for a family visit.
Lake Windermere is the largest natural lake in England, and the best way to explore it is by boat with many boat trips available in town.
