One Reddit user shared their experience of a nightmare cruise passenger and other holidaymakers were pretty horrified. They said it seemed as though the guest was trying to get “freebies”.
They said: “I noticed a general theme of manufacturing complaints and perceived slights in order to complain in an attempt to get freebies.
“One of the worst was at the buffet. A man in a mobility scooter was looking for a seat.
“He flagged down a member of staff and grunted commands. The woman was rushing around beforehand but stopped what she was doing, listened and then gave a reasonable solution.
“She was gone for about 90 seconds when he flagged down the first person with epaulets he saw.
“He complained about the lack of seats and then said ‘yeah I just spoke to a staff member and you know, she was really rude’.
“I went out of my way to talk to the officer and tell him that his staff was not in fact rude and was she was doing a good job.
“This one really p* me off because you can tell that this staff member was busting her a* to do a good job.
“They don’t give a f* that the target of their complaint will suffer professional consequences and may even lose their job.”
Another regular passenger said: “Unfortunately, people are jerks. They’re among most of the time, but on a cruise, they really seem to let loose.
“I have very little patience for the situation you describe and yet I cruise a lot though often on premium lines where there are fewer people.”
One passenger had some advice for avoiding the worst type of passengers while enjoying the holiday.
They said: “Be opposite to other people. When they go to the bar, swing by your room and drop stuff or or unpack.
“When they’re all out at the pool before lunch, I play games or sleep. I eat meals later in the day than most people.
“I prefer to be at the pool around four which is usually when people with kids start leaving to shower and get ready for dinner.”
Someone said: “Exactly, observe the patterns and try to do the opposite, will do wonders for stress levels.”
Another said: “That’s what I did. I napped during peak pool time and my friends and I took advantage of the pool and hot tub around 4:30-5pm when everyone was getting ready for dinner.
“Ate meals at off times to avoid the rush. It made everything much less stressful!”
One regular holidaymaker said: “Travel seems to bring out the worst in some people, especially if they’re inexperienced.”
However, some commenters were quick to point out that there can be difficult people on many types of holidays.
They felt the issue wasn’t unique to cruises and large hotels or theme parks could also suffer from similar problems.
