On Channel 5’s Cruising with Jane McDonald, the cruise expert set off on a luxurious river cruise. The former cruise ship singer found plenty to surprise her.

Jane’s river cruise kicked off in Budapest before making a few further stops including Vienna and Passau.

The lucky explorer was travelling on the Maria Theresa, one of the world’s most luxurious river ships.

Maria Theresa is part of the Uniworld fleet and has 54 staterooms and 11 exclusive suites onboard.

As soon as Jane boarded the vessel, she was amazed by the luxurious furnishings and exclaimed: “It all looks dead posh!”

The ship was extremely upmarket, with Rococo and Baroque style decor including silk wall furnishings.

Jane said: “It’s like a private yacht” and was incredibly impressed with her opulent stateroom.

She added: “This ship is very much like a floating Dorchester, whereas I’m used to Travelodge.

“The beds are handmade, they’re the same as the ones in the Savoy and Claridges (hotels). It feels just so luxurious. It’s beautiful. There’s even an extra toilet roll!”

Jane then shared one of her top tips for the first day of a cruise holiday as she headed off exploring the vessel.

She told viewers: “Whenever I’m on a cruise, one of the first things I do is get to know the ship and find out what’s where.

“This is the beauty of a river cruise, because no matter where you are, you’ve got a view of land and something to see.”

Jane admired the views of the riverbank from the ship’s deck and even took a turn at the captain’s controls.

Before the ship set off from Budapest, Jane had time to head off on a tour of the Hungarian capital.

She asked Twitter for recommendations, telling viewers: “I’d rather go on a recommendation” for a city tour.

After jumping in her hired car with the driver, she went to the city’s Grand Market, one of its top attractions.

However, after being shouted at by one of the stall holders, Jane unfortunately left unimpressed, saying: “It’s not my cup of tea.”

Jane also visited the Szechenyi thermal baths and watched as some of the bathers played chess from the water.

The next morning, Jane reclined in her opulent cabin as she was served breakfast in bed by a butler.

She said: “Cruising is all about doing the things you want to do, but never have time for at home. This morning I’m having breakfast in bed, delivered by a butler.”

Jane exclaimed: “I feel like a Princess!”.
