Cruise passenger banned for life after bringing forbidden item onboard

A cruise passenger has reportedly received a lifelong ban from Carnival Cruise Line after she brought a prohibited item onboard.

Melinda Van Veldhuizen took a pack of CBD gummies onboard the Carnival Horizon in August 2023.

She said that she used the gummies as a sleep aid, reports Cruise Hive, but security staff spotted the items when she came onboard and took her for further questioning.

The CBD gummies were legally purchased online. Van Veldhuizen boarded the cruise in Miami, Florida, where some CBD products are legal.

The gummies reportedly had less than 0.1 percent THC, well below the state’s legal threshold of 0.3 percent.

However, Carnival Cruise Line, like many other cruise lines, bans all CBD products regardless of whether they were legally purchased.

Carnival Cruise Line’s banned items regulations state: “Carnival recognizes that some states in the U.S. have legalised the use of recreational and/or medical marijuana.

“However, cruise lines are required to follow U.S federal law, which strictly prohibits possession and use of marijuana and other illegal substances. Consequently, marijuana, including marijuana for medical purposes, is not allowed on board.”

The line’s ships are covered by federal law and passengers aren’t allowed to bring CBD products onboard even if they were legally purchased.

Drug laws vary widely around the world and there are very strict punishments for possession in many destinations.

Van Veldhuizen was reportedly informed of her lifelong ban in a letter from the cruise line where it said she would not be permitted to sail on any of the line’s vessels in the future.

Cruise passengers can usually find a list of prohibited items on their cruise line’s website or they could ask their travel agent.

While it won’t be surprising to see that weapons are on the list, cruise lines also ban passengers from bringing candles.

As a result, some passengers prefer to bring a battery operated candle to set the mood in their cabin.
