New cruise ships have many incredible features. From zipwires to ice-rinks, there’s plenty to tempt holidaymakers to travel on the new ship on the block. But the newest ship isn’t usually the cheapest choice. Tom Thoms, of Mallorca.info, told Express.co.uk, that cruise tourists could save money without “sacrificing fun” if they choose to travel on an older ship.

Tom said: “Imagine you’re planning a cruise vacation, and you’re browsing the options online. You come across two ships sailing the same itinerary, with similar amenities and activities, but one ship is brand new while the other is older.

“Which one do you choose? As a travel expert, I would advise that you consider the older ship as a cost-saving option.

“When it comes to cruising, newer is not always better. While a brand new ship may have all the latest bells and whistles, it also comes with a higher price tag.

“Older ships may lack some of the newest features, but they can still offer an enjoyable and affordable vacation experience.”

Brand new cruise ships usually have some of the most exciting features so if a tourist’s priority is the ship, it might be the best choice. Royal Caribbean’s newest and largest ship, Wonder of the Seas, has eight neighbourhoods, a first for the line.

But if destination is more important and tourists aren’t bothered about ziplines or water slides, an older ship could be a budget friendly choice.

Tom said: “Cruise lines will sometimes offer discounted rates for older ships to encourage bookings and fill up cabins. You can also look out for last-minute deals, which may offer significant savings on older ships that are not selling out.”

New ships will usually book up the soonest so cruise guests might be more likely to pick up an attractive deal on a new ship.

Tom said: “Older ships may not have as many balconies or suites, but they often have a range of inside and ocean-view cabins that are more affordable.

“If you’re willing to forego some of the extra space and amenities, you can save money by choosing a smaller cabin.”

Interior cabins aren’t for everyone but they are usually one of the cheapest rooms to stay in onboard. If guests plan to spend the majority of their time outside the cabin, interior cabins can be a great choice.

Some passengers say they prefer interior cabins as they are less likely to be disturbed by light in the morning.

Tom advised there were also savings to be found when it comes to eating out on an older ship.

He told Express.co.uk: “While newer ships may have more specialty restaurants and gourmet options, older ships often have traditional dining rooms and buffets that offer a range of cuisine at a lower price point.

“You can also bring your own snacks and beverages onboard to save money on dining.”

Food and drinks might be cheaper on an older ship, leaving holidaymakers with more money to spend in each destination.

Tom added: “While newer ships may be more luxurious, older ships can offer a sense of history and nostalgia that can make for a unique and memorable experience.

“By embracing the classic charm of an older ship, you can save money without sacrificing the fun and relaxation of a cruise vacation.”

Tourists should be able to find the launch date of the cruise ship on the line’s website, along with all the information on facilities.

Cruise guests can also check out customer reviews to see if the ship will meet the requirements for their holiday.
