You can stay in terrifying Airbnb where you’re hummed to sleep by 1 million bees

This Friday is World Bee Day where eco-warriors and nature lovers promote the importance of bees.

And, in celebration of the big day an Italian beekeeper, Rocco Filomeno, has created a unique Airbnb stay which is sure to cause a buzz.

While for some this unusual destination may be a dream come true for others the thought of staying in a hive filled with more than a million honey bees might not be so tempting.

The structure of the Airbnb, called the Wonder Bee & Bee, means that the bees have built their hive within the walls of the cabin with a bumble bee entrance and exit next to the human entryway.

If you lay down on the beds inside the structure, you'll be able to gaze through a specially constructed box in the ceiling at a working hive and fall asleep – or struggle to sleep – surrounded by the gentle humming of bees.

The "Air bee and bee" was built by volunteers from the local community near Rocco’s olive farm just outside the idyllic village of Grottole in southern Italy and cost £13,600 to make.

The unique stay consists of a single bedroom (with two single beds) surrounded by nine hives for a total of 1 million bees.

The Airbnb listing states: “Wonder Bee & Bee is the first place in the world to sleep wrapped in the buzz and scents of 1 million bees.

“The micro-architecture, located in an olive grove between Grottole and Matera, will allow you to have a unique and unforgettable experience, experiencing the benefits of apiterapy.

“The house is made entirely of fir and birch wood.

“The olive grove where Wonder Bee & Bee stands has a beautiful view, ideal for your moments of relaxation and alfresco dining.”

It continued: “Designed by designer Davide Tagliabue, the self-constructed structure by the community of Wonder Grottole is designed to welcome guests and offer them all the benefits of bees.

“In addition to the bees present in the nine special beehives around Wonder Bee & Bee, there is a special viewing horn within the living spaces.

“Inside the lookout horn, a bee swamp is making a fairytale naturally without a blanket.

“The nine beehives connected to the interior room – have a net – so as not to let the bees in but at the same time spread apisound and apisound to give a unique and relaxing experience in the midst of nature and in connection with the world of bees.”

There is a private bathroom available in a nearby cottage and a camping shower hanging from an olive tree nearby.

The listing added: “The experience is 100% rural. You will be in touch with the countryside, bees and nature.

“There's no electricity, but we'll provide LED lights that recharge in the sun. There is no fridge and we will provide you with a cooler bag with fresh water.”

A night in the Wonder Bee & Bee will set you back £149 with all proceeds going to NGO Wonder Grottole’s bee conservation projects.

“This is the first place in the world where you can sleep immersed in the distinctive sound and aroma of the bees, experiencing ‘bee-therapy’ in the most authentic and natural way,” said Rocco Filomeno, beekeeper and Airbnb Host.
