Woman shames ‘big’ bloke for ‘manspreading’ on plane as people dub him ‘selfish’

We’ve all felt annoyed on a plane before whether that’s because someone has stolen our seat or shoved their feet onto the arm rest.

In fact, flight attendants have even shared some of the most irritating things passengers do while on board.

They claim that drunk people “are horrible” and “smell” when flying.

Meanwhile, others claim that ordering the crew about or joining the Mile High Club is worse.

But, one woman recently shared her holiday story about a major bugbear many passengers experience from fellow flyers.

Posting on Reddit, she said: "I'm halfway through a 30-hour trip.

"I was exhausted and was looking forward to sleeping on the first leg since it was nighttime. I’m an average-sized woman.

"The passenger next to me was a big man in his 30s – not the Rock big, but plane seats are increasingly small and probably not big enough for him to be comfortable.

"The plane takes off and suddenly I feel a push on my legs – the man is manspreading bad and taking over my space.”

Manspreading is when a man pushes his legs apart when sitting in a way that encroaches on the space of the people beside him.

The woman continued: “I politely ask him to keep on his side and fall asleep. An hour later it’s his leg and his arm that’s occupying some of my seat.

"I tell him again I know it’s uncomfortable for him but I paid for my seat and if he wanted more space he should have booked a seat with more leg space.

"He then tells me he feels no need to buy another one since 'other passengers understand that he’s too big to fit and let him spread a little bit'.

"At this point I tell him that the extra money he didn’t spend on a bigger seat he’s taking it from me by using my space and put my back pack between our two legs – effectively preventing him from manspreading.

"I felt a little bad but I really didn’t want to feel his leg pressing against mine for the entire flight."

She asked whether she was an “a**hole” for reprimanding the man and, in the comments, people shared their opinions.

One person said: “He’s openly admitting that he knows and expects others to give up their comfort for his own. What an entitled jerk.”

Another woman exclaimed: “I don’t understand why men feel they have the right to take up twice the space by pointing their [crotch] at everyone.

“While women have to make themselves as small as possible to accommodate.”

And, some blokes agreed with her.

One noted: “I don't either and I'm a dude. I've been using crowded public transport for years, and I always have my legs close together, just from habit.”

“6'5 [male] here, athletic build,” added another. “As a larger person, one should know that you are responsible for your size. ALWAYS either reserve an aisle seat to spread out into or an exit row seat in advance.”

“The guy has an ego the size of a planet,” noted a third.

And, crew members even joined in the debate.

One recommended: “I work in aviation. If you tell a flight attendant they may have reseated you to a better spot if available and/or spoken to the passenger.

“The unwritten rule is that if you have a window seat you get the view, if you have the middle seat you get both arm rests, and if you have the aisle seat you get the easy access to the lav.”
