The British government has simplified its rules around international travel. The traffic light system for international travel is a relatively easy system to follow. It groups countries into lists according to how safe they are considered to be to travel to. Testing requirements and potential quarantine measures are enforced based on a countries’ listing.
There are currently 29 countries on the UK’s green list, which means the government believes these countries are relatively safe for Brits to travel to.
But, despite being on this green list, you might not be able to travel to these countries, because they may not be willing to accept British travellers.
Some countries have continued to keep their borders shut to Brits over fears of the Delta variant, which makes up the majority of cases in the UK.
According to Kayak, there are only five countries that will allow Brits in without any restrictions.
Some other countries will accept British tourists provided they follow Covid safety measures, such as proof of a negative vaccine or quarantining upon arrival.
So which countries have fully opened their borders to Brits?
The following countries will allow most visitors from the UK in without any restrictions:
- Albania
- Colombia
- Costa Rica
- Mali
- Mexico
But despite throwing open their borders, none of these countries are on the UK’s green list.
So they are not deemed safe to travel to for a holiday or without a pressing reason.
Albania, Mali and Mexico are on the UK’s amber list.
The Government doesn’t ban Brits from travelling to amber list countries but you will have to quarantine at home for 10 days upon your return to the UK if you aren’t fully vaccinated.
Colombia and Costa Rica remain on the UK’s red list.
The Government has stressed you should not travel to red list countries at all.
If you travel back to the UK from a red list country, you will only be allowed to enter the UK if you are a British or Irish National, or if you have residence rights in the UK.
On arrival, you will have to isolate in a government-managed quarantine hotel for 10 days.
So before you rush to book your holiday to any country, it’s crucial to check both the travel rules imposed by the British Government and by the authorities in the country where you intend to visit.
