Where Britons want to spend their winter abroad revealed by Tripadvisor – and it’s Dubai that takes the top spot, with Tenerife second and New York beating Paris

The number one holiday spot for Britons this winter is Dubai, according to data from Tripadvisor.

The gleaming UAE city tops a ranking of popular international destinations for Brits to spend the months of December, January and February in.

Tripadvisor has drawn up the list using search and ‘sentiment data’ (positive and negative opinions), with the research placing Costa Adeje in Tenerife, Canary Islands, second.

In third place comes New York, beating popular European cities Paris and Amsterdam, which place fourth and fifth on the list, respectively.

Coming in at number six is the famed holiday spot Benidorm, on the Mediterranean coast of Spain, followed by Puerto Del Carmen (seventh) in Lanzarote. 

Rounding out the list is Thailand’s capital Bangkok (eighth) followed by two in-demand spots in Spain’s Canary Islands, Playa Blanca (ninth) in Lanzarote, and Playa de las Americas in sunny Tenerife (tenth). 

Tripadvisor also compiled a list of the fastest-growing international destinations, with Hong Kong taking the number one spot, followed by Tokyo in second place.

The travel company has further revealed the top 10 most popular domestic destinations for travel in the months of December, January and February. 

London tops the ranking, followed by the Scottish capital, Edinburgh, in second place and York in third.

Also featuring on the list are northwest cities Liverpool (fourth), Manchester (fifth) and Blackpool (sixth). The rest of the ranking comprises Bath (seventh), Glasgow (eighth), Birmingham (ninth) and Belfast, in tenth place. 

The fastest-growing domestic destinations, according to Tripadvisor, are Derry/ Londonderry, in Northern Ireland (first) and Broadway (second), an idyllic village in the Cotswolds. 

Tripadvisor also shared the fastest-growing international destinations for Christmas travel, revealing where Brits are looking to jet off to for a break between December 21, 2023 and January 1, 2024. 

Amsterdam places top, followed by Cancun, Mexico (second), and Rovaniemi, Lapland (third).

For those looking for a budget winter getaway, Tripadvisor suggests booking for January 2024, which comes out as the most ‘affordable’ month. 

‘The week of January 15 is the most affordable week for Bora Bora, Siem Reap, New York and Paris,’ the travel company says.  

Looking ahead, it seems to be a busy year for travel, as Tripadvisor reveals four in five Brits (83 per cent) are planning to book a holiday next year, around one-third (31 per cent) of whom plan to take three to four trips across the year. 

Tripadvisor says hotels are by far the most preferred accommodation type for 2024, at 80 per cent, followed by vacation rentals at 27 per cent.
