The beautiful island of Saint Barthélemy was featured on Channel 5’s ‘Playgrounds of the Rich and Famous’ tonight. Known as the “ultimate escape for the rich and famous” Pippa Middleton has holidayed there with her family.

St Barts is a French-speaking Caribbean island with stunning white sand beaches, private retreats and exclusive boutique hotels.

There are only 30 hotels on the island with just 600 bookable rooms which helps keep the island exclusive.

“There is nothing called mass luxury,” said one of the programme’s experts, as she explained why celebrities love the island’s exclusivity.

Pippa Middleton isn’t the only celebrity to love the island -Jay Z, Beyonce and Roman Abramovich are also regulars on St Barts.

When celebrities come to St Barts, “they just want to be quiet” and unbothered by paparazzi.

The luxury island has a special significance to Pippa as her husband James Middleton spent his childhood split between St Barts and the UK.

James is brother to Spencer Matthews, the former Made in Chelsea star. The brothers’ father owns Eden Rock, a luxury hotel in St Barts.

It’s impossible to take mass transport to the paradise island so the privileged guests can only get there by private jet.

The programme featured a luxury gourmet restaurant called Bonito, famous for its French cuisine.

Pippa Middleton is a regular diner at the restaurant, where a starter costs upwards of $25 and around $17 for dessert.

Popular dishes include fish such as seabass and mahi mahi while other offerings are veal and lobster risotto.

The island has a heavy French influence and one guest said: “It’s like France, you get the beautiful beaches and food without the c****y attitude.”

Accommodation on the billionaires’ playground island is extremely expensive and a villa can cost as much as $45,000 per week.

Channel 5 followed one privileged engaged couple as they planned their wedding on the paradise island.

The pair had chosen a beach wedding and said: “An idyllic wedding destination would look exactly like this.”

Activities on St Barts include scuba diving, yachting, sunbathing and swimming with exotic sea creatures.

The island is known for its “incredible social scene” although it is very hard to score an invitation to one of the celebrity parties.

When a big name bash is happening on St Barts, the shoreline is crowded with billionaires’ superyachts.

Pippa Middleton visited St Barts with husband James and son Arthur in 2020 where they enjoyed regular trips to the white-sand beaches.

She is frequently joined by mum, Carole, and her brother, James on holidays at Eden Rock, the “ultimate escape for the rich and famous”.
