‘You would think you were in a tropical country’: Travellers say THIS ‘awe-inspiring’ British beach with turquoise waters, secret caves and waterfalls looks like the Seychelles

This breathtaking British beach is being mistaken for a tropical paradise.

Nanjizal Beach, a boulder-covered stretch of sand sheltered by cliffs, lies along the Cornish coast around 10 miles (16km) from Penzance.

To the one side of the beach, there’s a distinctive stone chasm called Song of the Sea – or ‘Zawn Pyg’ – which is surrounded by rock pools. Adding to its allure, the beach is known for its turquoise waters and its waterfalls.

Tripadvisor users have taken to the review platform to heap praise on the Cornish idyll. Reviewer ‘TravelUK’ wrote: ‘When it’s beautiful weather it looks amazing, nearly like [the] Seychelles.’

Reviewer ‘tootusCornwall’, meanwhile, weighed in with: ‘This place is stunning, peaceful, tranquil and awe-inspiring. You would think you were in a tropical country… the pool around the rocks was turquoise in colour.’

A third review, left by user ‘Glenn & Cameron Broughton’ read: ‘Gorgeous sandy bay… azure waters and fantastic cliffs – what more could you want?’

Travel blogger Jack Jeffs recently shared a video of the beach on TikTok that has racked up nearly 300,000 views. In it, he declares the water in the rock pools as ‘crystal clear’ adding: ‘It’s such a refreshing experience [to swim] through’.

In the comments below, TikTok user Toby declared: ‘I refuse to believe this is in Great Britain.’

Accessing the beach, which is also known as Mill Bay, is tricky – it can only be reached on foot. It lies just off the South West Coastal Path, a 630-mile coastal route that stretches from Minehead in Somerset to Poole Harbour in Dorset.

Local guide Cornwall Beaches says: ‘Due to its relative inaccessibility, Nanjizal has remained more or less untouched and never gets busy. There are an abundance of caves and interesting rock formations for those not content with taking in the view.’

This dramatic scenery clearly has a cinematic quality, as scenes from Doctor Who were filmed on the beach back in the 1960s – one scene sees a Tardis appearing on the sand. 

Cornwall Beaches adds that visitors are in with a chance of spotting seals off the coast during a visit. Wild ponies can also be spotted grazing nearby. 

To reach the beach, visitors can hike the seaside trail from nearby Land’s End in the north or from Porthgwarra Beach in the south. Alternatively, they can park their cars inland in the village of Trevescan and tackle the roughly hour-long trek to the shore. A steep pathway eventually leads travellers down to the beach.

It’s worth noting that there’s no lifeguard cover at the beach, so bathers must take extra caution while swimming.
