Travel restrictions have continued to change over the last few months. This has left uncertainty for those in the UK hoping to enjoy a summer break.

People returning from amber list countries will not have to quarantine if they have been given two doses of the coronavirus vaccine.

However, this rule does not apply to people returning from France, even if they have been double-jabbed.

Simon Calder appeared on BBC to discuss the latest changes.

The expert commented on the new rules dubbed as the “amber plus” list which will see different restrictions for countries on the same travel list.

“Who knows what other categories await,” he said.

“Honestly, travel this summer looks increasingly just for the bold and the desperate.”

Travel rules are updated regularly and changes are often made with little warning.

Transport secretary Grant Shapps previously said holidaymakers should not be surprised as this has been happening frequently.

The expert went on to discuss how quickly some travel changes come into place.

He agreed it has been made clear Britons will not be able to have a normal summer in terms of holidays.

“Absolutely, the Government has been consistent in saying this isn’t going to be a normal summer,” Simon stated.

Still, the expert suggested the most recent changes will still be a shock to many.

“However, [the Government gave] the impression just nine days ago that we can start a race to the sun,” he continued.

“[Now to] find out the rules have changed fundamentally for many people, [they] are either cancelling trips or trying to work out if they can self-isolate.

“It’s just triggering a huge amount of upset… and a sense they cannot possibly have any confidence in any travel arrangements.

“The travel industry is just saying consumer confidence is utterly destroyed by this latest move.”

Earlier this week, Simon appeared on Good Morning Britain to discuss other changes to the travel lists.

He stated how “complicated” it is for Britons to travel at the moment.

“Malta remains on the Government green list for now at least,” Simon said.

“But it just illustrates the incredible amount of complication that’s involved in pretty much any international journey.”
