Three in ten Brits would rather keep fit on holiday than lounge on a sunbed

Nearly a quarter of Brits (23%) will prioritise good exercise facilities – when booking a holiday, a survey has found.

A poll of 2,000 holidaymakers found that 37% like to keep fit every day during a vacation, exercising for an average of 49 minutes a day.

Three in ten (31%) would choose fitness activities over lounging on a sunbed, and 37% would rather work out than enjoy a nice cocktail while abroad.

And a third would put exercising high on their list of holiday activities, while 61% said the same about walking.

It comes as 24% said they try to maintain their usual good habits while away from home, with seven in ten continuing to focus on wellbeing even while abroad.

But 50% use a trip away as the perfect time to start a new self-care routine – including making time to read a book (50%).

The research was commissioned by Hilton, which has expanded its partnership with Peloton, offering its bikes to hotels across the UK, Germany, and Puerto Rico, and participating properties in Canada.

Amanda Al-Masri, vice president of wellness at the hotel brand, said: “Wellness can be an influential factor when it comes to holiday choices for some travellers – even when people are away, they don’t want to break their routine or healthy habits.

“Expanding our industry-first partnership with Peloton allows us to offer an elevated wellness experience, whether guests are starting a fitness routine, or are looking to maintain the habits they keep at home.”

The study also found that to ensure a self-care routine is maintained away from home, 30% always make a list of priorities beforehand, while 29% set time aside each day during their stay.

Nearly three in ten (28%) only focus on the smaller habits, while 25% set boundaries to help them make more mindful choices, and 22% set a daily to-do list.

But 47% find being away from home allows them more time to focus on their mental and physical wellness.

Despite 87% of those polled, via OnePoll, having every intention of maintaining healthy habits such as this, 14% do find it difficult to stick to them when they are away.

For 74%, not being in their usual everyday routine was their main struggle, while 31% blamed the lack of equipment when away.

Daniel Sprung, senior director of international, partnerships, and commercial at Peloton, said: “We are constantly innovating to meet our members and prospective members where they are.

“Expanding access to our Peloton Bike and extensive content, in partnership with Hilton, was a natural next step.”
