Flying in a plane can be incredibly exciting… or totally scary.

A fear of flying isn’t uncommon and many Brits get a little shaky when they hit turbulence or at take-off.

Thankfully, it’s extremely unlikely that you would ever be caught up in a plane crash – millions of flights take off every year and very few ever run into trouble.

Flying is actually considered one of the safest modes of transport!

But, on the off chance you are you can actually improve your risk of staying safe by choosing the correct seat.

A travel expert told CNN that one specific area of the plane is the safest spot to sit in.

They stated: “Sitting next to an exit row will always provide you with the fastest exit in the case of an emergency, granted there's no fire on that side.

“But the wings of a plane store fuel, so this disqualifies the middle exit rows as the safest row option.

“At the same time, being closer to the front means you'll be impacted before those in the back, which leaves us with the last exit row.

“As for why the middle seats are safer than the window or aisle seats, that is, as you might expect, because of the buffer provided by having people on either side.”

They noted that the type of accident does alter the odds of fatality – ocean nose dives, mountain hits and airspeed all affect the chance of surviving.

Plus, larger planes are generally a little safer than small planes!

If you suffer from a phobia of flying there are courses, run by easyJet, to help you overcome your fear.
