The travel experts at Rough Guide have named their best destinations for 2023. Along with Antarctica and Berlin, one English city made the list.

Leeds was named one of Rough Guide’s best destinations for 2023 and was described as perfect for “gourmands, gallery-lovers and theatre fans”.

The travel company said Leeds’ inclusion on the list was a “no-brainer” as it’s the 2023 UK City of Culture.

The team said: “Leeds is home to Opera North, Leeds Grand Theatre and Northern Ballet, lovers of live performance are spoiled for choice.”

Opera North is the only nationally recognised UK opera company outside London and has an exciting 2023 schedule of productions.

Holidaymakers could book tickets for world class performances of Tosca, The Cunning Little Vixen or Ariadne auf Naxos.

Leeds is also home to the UK’s longest running music hall, the City Varieties Music Hall, and Hyde Park Picture House, the world’s latest gas-lit cinema.

The city’s art gallery has a range of art from top creatives including Francis Bacon paintings and Grayson Perry sculptures.

Rough Guide added: “If that art and culture leaves you feeling hungry, fear not, Leeds isn’t known as the ‘Foodie Capital of the North’ for nothing.

“Kirkgate Market – well worth visiting for a wander in its own right – now boasts a refurbished food hall that’ll have you struggling to pick your lunch.”

One of Europe’s largest indoor markets, Kirkgate is a shopping paradise where tourists can pick up anything from discount biscuits and fresh fish to jewellery.

The market’s street food is some of Leeds’ best and tourists can feast on anything from Turkish sandwiches at Mr Mackerel to vegetarian Indian delights at Manjit’s Kitchen.

Outside the market, Tharavudu has some of the UK’s best southern Indian cuisine including a bargain lunch deal while Zaap Thai offers affordable food in a vibrantly decorated restaurant.

The Yorkshire city is also the birthplace of the UK’s first independent food festival, Leeds Indie Food.

Tourists should head to Leeds in May to enjoy a whole range of foodie events celebrating the city’s gourmet scene.

As City of Culture, Leeds will be playing host to many exciting creative events from street art to theatre.

The cultural year will kick off with a live performance of The Awakening at Headingley Stadium featuring Corinne Bailey Rae and Simon Armitage.

The Scottish Highlands was the only other destination in the UK to make the prestigious travel list.

Rough Guide said the remote paradise was one of the “most beautiful places in Scotland” and would satisfy any “fresh air” cravings.

Tourists can explore the Cairngorm mountains or search for the elusive Loch Ness monster at the Great Glen lochs.

Britons could ride the West Highland Railway from Glasgow to Mallaig to enjoy the views at Loch Lomond.
