With many buildings belonging to the Royal Family being open to the public, they can be the ideal place to go for your next trip. These homes offer activities, expeditions, and stunning sights for tourists to enjoy. With holidays abroad still up for question for many Britons, perhaps the perfect holiday activity for your family this summer will be visiting a building where the royals live or have lived in other periods of history.

These homes carry centuries worth of history where you can enjoy and soak up British history.

With most of these residences closed in the summer of 2020, Britons will be delighted to know they can visit them once again this summer.

Buckingham Palace:

As one of Britain’s most recognisable landmarks, Buckingham Palace is the official residence of the Queen.

From the end of July to September this summer the Queen will open her home once again to visitors, providing the chance to tour the lavish State Rooms and garden and see the great treasures from the Royal Collection.

Kensington Palace:

This has been the home of many members of the Royal Family including Queen Victoria, Diana Princess of Wales, and currently the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

This summer you can pay the palace a visit from Wednesdays to Sundays, and visit the Victoria Revealed exhibition.

Also, the statue of Diana, Princess of Wales was just recently unveiled by her sons Princes William and Harry, which would make the perfect visit for your family this summer.

Windsor Castle:

This is the largest and oldest occupied castle in the world, where the Queen has been spending the majority of her time since the outbreak of the COVID pandemic.

Here you can view the grand State Apartments, St George’s Chapel, and Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House, which is the most famous dolls’ house in the world.

Hampton Court Palace:

This was the infamous home of Henry VIII.

At Hampton Court, you can take a tour through Tudor history in the kitchens, palace grounds, the chapel, and the Hampton Court Maze.

Sandringham:

Sandringham House in Norfolk is one of the Queen’s favourite homes, where she spends Christmas with the rest of the Royal Family.

You can view the house, gardens and museum which are open to the public from March to October.

Tower of London:

Although not a royal residence, this British landmark is steeped in royal history, especially as two of Henry VIII’s wives were executed here.

You can visit the tower to view the Crown Jewels and receive a tour of the tower to learn more about its history.
