Never leave the ‘please clean’ sign on your hotel door

The Do Not Disturb sign, (or the flip side, Please Make Up My Room) is often used by guests when they want some privacy – or would like their room cleaned.

While you may think it’s helpful to alert the staff as to the state of your room, it could project the entirely wrong message. Those who use it often during a stay could be drawing attention to themselves in a major way.

The Please Make Up My Room sign, in particular, is a red flag to would-be thieves. It shows that your room is unoccupied and if they are fast enough, they could easily enter your room undetected.

A manager from ADT security has advised: “While you may think it is helpful to leave a service sign on your hotel room door, leaving a ‘please clean’ note can notify potential thieves that your room is empty.

“It is recommended that you notify hotel reception staff that you would like your room cleaned and if you feel it necessary, for additional security, stay in your hotel room while it is being cleaned.”

Thieves could also use the sharp edge to easily and silently, move the latch on your door.

A video posted by LockPickingLawyer shows just how easy it is to open a door with a room key.

He just wiggles the thin card over the latch and it opens effortlessly in seconds.

Next time you go into a hotel room, check the door thoroughly. If you’re in any way concerned ask to be moved to another room.

Another risk is carrying around your card holder and we’ve all done this. Not only does it have the hotel logo on it, but your surname and room number too.

Anyone who finds it if you’ve accidentally dropped it out of your bag or pocket, could calmly walk into the hotel and straight into your room.
