Inside the Rhodes hotel with swim-up rooms, family suites and ‘wild’ water park

Commanding a huge stretch of Kallithea Beach on the elegant and sheltered east coast of Rhodes, the Amada Colossos Resort combines five-star luxury living and generous Greek hospitality.

Ideal for couples and families with children of all ages, the resort goes to extreme lengths to give all guests the ultimate island getaway.

With swim-up rooms, family suites, grand buffets, a la carte dining, adults-only areas, a wet and wild water park, plus 24-hour room service, there is never a need to compromise.

Blending in with the hotel’s dreamy beachfront setting, rooms and communal areas are decorated in natural tones. Slatted wooden headboards, backlit mirrors, thick drapes and ambient lamps echo the sand and pebbles on the 1,400ft private shoreline just a few steps away. Splashes of blue dashed across wall art are a nod to the dazzling Aegean.

Despite its size – 699 rooms across 17 categories, with 16 bars and restaurants and an amphitheatre – the Amada goes the extra mile when it comes to sustainability.

Energy-efficient windows, low energy LED bulbs, artwork created from crates and drinkable tap water are some of its planet-friendly features.

The food and drink

Tantalising buffet breakfasts, local specialities, cocktails as the sun goes down – these are all designed to become a part of your holiday memories.

Start the day with a pick ‘n’ mix of Greek yogurt and honey, sweet figs, syrup-drenched pancakes and freshly squeezed juices as you take in the pink skies of the sunrise coast, then move on to snacks by the pool or hot and cold dishes piled high in the main buffet restaurant as you look out to sea. The three a la carte restaurants offer Greek, Asian fusion and Italian cuisine.

Our host recommended the sweet, sticky pork bao buns and fried rice from the Asian kitchen, but traditional Greek cuisine is where the resort shines.

Enjoy small bowls of olives, smoky aubergine and feta cheese, crisp salad, pitta bread with dips, calamari and prawns served with rice, followed by sweet, nutty baklava and melekouni – chewy bites of sesame and honey traditional to Rhodes – around a candlelit table at sunset.

The spa

Dimmed lights and soothing sounds accompany a cup of hot Greek tea with lemon and honey as you enter the Amada Wellness Spa. Slide into the sauna for a hug of dry heat, before cooling off with a blast of ice water and a soak in the Jacuzzi. Guests can be pressed and pummelled, scrubbed and exfoliated with body rituals and facials in treatment rooms.

What to do

The huge main pool is split into areas for ball games, adults-only and separate swim-up bars for families and grown-ups.

For an adrenalin hit, head to the water park with slides called Black Hole, Body Slide and Freefall. Little ones will love the Aquatower’s tipping bucket and the fun-filled Spray Action Zone.

The daily activities programme for children includes treasure hunts, table tennis and cookery schools. Kids’ clubs cater for babies from four months, right up to teenagers.

For blissed out days on the beach are are sunbeds, parasols, as well as private gazebos that turn into secluded dining venues should you fancy a candlelit supper by the sea.

Sports and fitness fans can try al fresco yoga, aqua fit, dance or aerobics. Play boccia or volleyball on the beach, join in a footy tournament or enjoy darts at the beach bar.

The resort has recently introduced a range of watersports including water-skiing, wakeboarding and hoverboarding. Guests can even take part in a beginners’ scuba diving course with Go Dive Rhodes’

PADI-certified instructors. In the evenings the amphitheatre bursts into life with mini discos, comedy, karaoke and quizzes.

Days out

At UNESCO-protected Rhodes Town, you can wander the ancient streets and shop for beach gear, handbags, pottery and crafts, or stop for a Greek coffee in a shaded bar.
