Today Queen Elizabeth II will be taken from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall for her lying in state. This will cause some disruptions throughout the day, as well as on the day of her funeral, Monday September 19.
The official Heathrow Airport Twitter told today’s flyers this morning that their flights may be delayed.
The tweet read: “Out of respect for the period of mourning following the passing of Her Majesty The Queen, some flights between 13:50–15:40 on Wed Sept 14 will be disrupted to ensure silence during the ceremonial procession. Airlines will notify passengers directly of any flight changes.”
Royal Correspondent Charlie Proctor further reiterated: “Heathrow Airport has delayed flights this afternoon to ensure the procession of The Queen’s coffin from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall is not disturbed, and so there is complete silence on The Mall.”
The Mall is a road in the City of Westminster, between Buckingham Palace at its western end and Trafalgar Square via Admiralty Arch to the east.
But the flight disruptions will not be limited to today, with Heathrow Airport also anticipating delays on the day of the Queen’s funeral.
This will take place on Monday, September 19, and will be observed as a national Bank Holiday.
A spokesperson tweeted via the official account: “We anticipate further changes to the Heathrow operation on Mon 19 Sept, when Her Majesty’s funeral is due to take place.
“We will communicate more details over the coming days. We apologise for the disruption caused, as we work to limit the impact on the upcoming events.”

Opinions on the announcement have been mixed, with many agreeing that delaying flights is a sign of respect for the late Queen.
However, others believed it could be disruptive to peoples’ travel plans.
Twitter user Holly Roake commented: “Nice touch. Shame that not everyone sees the need to respect who we have just lost.”
@seanayre23 seconded this: “Fantastic work Heathrow, sorry that some people can’t understand the respect and choose to abuse your customer service teams on social media.”
Natasha Armstrong added: “#totalrespect for this decision. Well done.”
Adrian Mac Moore also agreed with Heathrow’s decision: “Well done all at Heathrow, it is very much appreciated, respect.”
But not everybody agrees about the necessity of such a decision.
@asdhugk commented: “Is this a joke? I loved the Queen but come on. People will now miss their connections and anything else the other side.
“It’s not fair to disrupt travel like this. I’m flying to Bali on Monday and if that gets affected I’ll be absolutely gutted.”
@DeanBannan claimed: “Absolutely ridiculous. As if Heathrow isn’t bad enough as it is.”
