There are thousands of fantastic holiday destinations around the world, but one location has most Brits drooling at the thought of taking a trip there.

The Maldives, a stunning collection of islands and atolls in the Indian Ocean, has become a dream for many.

With its white sandy beaches and tropical blue waters we’re not surprised so many of us hope to jet off there on honeymoons and blow-out trips abroad.

Especially when snaps of gorgeous bungalows that sit above the ocean are spamming our Instagram feeds…

But, while the cost of a Maldives holiday makes the beautiful bungalows a once-in-a-lifetime expense there are other stunning destinations that offer a similar over-water vibe.

And, some of them cost far less than your average Maldives trip where one night could set you back between £800 and £1600 a night, according to Prince of Travel.

Plus, travelling from the airport on Mali to your island could cost you hundreds extra if you require boat or sea plane passage.

Luckily, we’ve rounded up four over-water bungalows that won’t cost you the Earth…

1. Stella Island Resort in Crete, Greece

This 225-room adults only hotel boasts overwater bungalows, which looks like the ones you’d see in the Maldives.

There’s also a giant pool, stylish decks for sunbathing and a heavenly private beach.

The resort hosts five restaurants, a spa and scuba diving and sailing opportunities are nearby.

Over-water bungalows are decorated in wood and lots of white and blue tones just like many in the Maldives.

And, you can book flight and stay packages at the resort through Jet2.

Rooms at the resort will set you back from £414 according to booking.com, but an overwater villa could cost up to £864.

2. Bellagio Beach Resort & Spa near Hurghada, Egypt

The Bellagio (formerly the Panorama) resort offers different types of bungalows, from pool to beach, garden view and even family rooms.

Located overlooking El Gouna, a town on Egypt's Red Sea, the resort features gardens and a private beach on a lagoon.

It also has two swimming pools with a kids' section, a Jacuzzi, a pool bar and a private beach.

Guests can take part in water sports like surfing, waterskiing, sailing and windsurfing, with activities like tennis and horse riding too.

Tickets to Egypt including accommodation won't break the bank either.

The cost of a Lagoon Bungalow, all inclusive, is currently set at £228 per night on LoveHolidays.

3. Floating Lodge, La Casa Nenufar, Panama

Those looking to stay a little further afield may like to stay in this lodge based between Central and South America.

The eco-lodge floats upon the waters of the Bocas del Toro and comes with a Queen sized bed, folding bed and private bathroom.

Also available to use is a boat, paddle, two kayaks, a longboard, two bikes, masks, find and more for exploring the water.

There’s also a free breakfast, while lunch and dinner are available for just £14 (£11.23).

Mangrove tours, water skiing and excursions are also available – and a night in the lodge will cost you just £73 according to RentByOwner.

Unsurprisingly, they’re pretty booked up – so you may have to keep an eye out for new dates.

4. Sandals South Coast, Jamaica

Surrounded on all sides by the turquoise water of Jamaica this resort is pure heaven.

Sandals offers both over-water bungalows and swim up rooms as well as having soaking tubs, in room bars and nine restaurants.

Plus, the over-water bungalow even comes with a butler service…

Activities available include complimentary scuba diving as well as water sports, glass bottom boats, night tennis, volleyball, a gym and spa.
