Oftentimes the first thing holidaymakers do when they get off a plane is check out their hotel room, pool, bar, or the local surroundings.
But according to one expert, one self-care skincare ritual should take priority post-flight.
Chartered chemist and Founder of SOS Serum Skincare Bruce Green suggested that flyers should hop in the shower as soon as possible after a flight.
As well as washing away that groggy in-flight feeling, he suggested the conditions on a plane can be a bit gross – and even dangerous.
Bruce said: “Aeroplanes have their own microbiome, which is mostly made of human skin as we’re constantly shedding and sitting on a plane for quite some time.

“Although planes are cleaned for us to use, studies have shown bacteria and viruses can live on armrests, seat belts, window shades, tray tables, toilet handles, and more for days.”
The expert suggested that the post-flight wash is important for long haul flights, but slightly less for those shorter journeys.
“If you’ve got off a short haul, you may not have to worry about it, as you’ll have the same exposure as you might in an office building.

“But as the flights get longer, the microbes on your skin can grow and that can get a bit smelly.
“If you do happen to pick up bacteria or fungi that’s not your own, this may lead to itchiness and bumps on the skin and scalp.”
Hopping into a spotlessly clean, fresh bed on holiday – that you didn’t have to make – is one of the lovely luxuries of being away.

However, neglecting the post-flight shower could ruin this by “depositing germs that aren’t your own into your new space”.
“But showering with soap, and shampoo for the hair, removes any of the germs you may have picked up, as well as reduces the levels of your own that have grown over time.
“Showering after a flight is probably a good thing, regardless of the length of the flight, if only to have that clean feeling after being cooped up in a cabin.”
