From the Scottish Highlands to the Isle of Wight, several Brits are drawn to have a getaway time and time again where they went as youngsters. New research from holiday lettings company holidaycottages.co.uk reveals half of people said that they return because they love the location, while 30 per cent admitted that they have an emotional attachment to the area.

Lockdown has also shifted the nation’s thoughts on choosing a holiday around the British Isles, 31 percent admitted that they are more likely to consider a staycation since the pandemic.

Analysing the research, the top ten most popular nostalgic holiday destinations that Brits visited the most as children, have been discovered. They are:

1. Cornwall (15%)

2. Devon (11%)

3. North Yorkshire (7%)

4. North Wales (6%)

5. Lake District (5%)

6. Kent (5%)

7. Dorset (5%)

8. Isle of Wight (4%)

9. Scottish Highlands (4%)

10. Lancashire (4%)

Cornwall was crowned the top location for nostalgia, with 15% of Brits saying it was their favourite place to visit when they were young.

Famous for its surfing and sailing alongside it scenic coastal shore, it’s the most popular destination amongst all age groups apart from 55–64-year-olds, who instead favoured Devon.

The South West county took second place, with North Yorkshire (7%), coming in third, both destination boasting national parks that are great for stargazing.

But why do Brits come back year after year? Of those surveyed, 23 per cent said they re-visit because they like returning to a familiar area, with a further 21 per cent saying they want to make new ones with their own family.

Reminiscing about the good old days can bring back many happy thoughts for holidaygoers, the top five biggest memories are:

1. Long car journeys (43%)

2. Being around family (42%)

3. Eating fish & chips (37%)

4. Making sandcastles (36%)

5. Playing on the amusements/arcades (32%)

Interestingly, only around one in ten Brits said that they went on staycations when they were younger but now prefer to go on holiday abroad.

Commenting on the research, Shannon Keary, Digital PR Manager at holidaycottages.co.uk says: “It’s really interesting to find out all about Brits’ nostalgic holidays – where people holidayed as a child, the top reasons why so many return year after year and their biggest memories when looking back on holidays as children.

“It’s no big surprise that Cornwall was the most popular childhood location with it being such a beautiful holiday spot for families to enjoy.

“The UK has so many amazing holiday destinations and it’s great to see how loyal Brits are to their favourite childhood spots!”
