Holidaymakers are spoiled for choice, with favourites like Greece and Spain offering a range of island getaway options. In a new list released by leading American magazine Travel + Leisure, the best European islands are ranked.
Voted on by readers, the islands were compared according to their activities and sights, natural attractions and beaches, food, friendliness, and overall value.
The top 20 islands in Europe didn’t have very surprising results, with Greece featuring heavily.
But there was one surprise among all the sun-drenched Spanish and Portuguese islands.
A British island popped up at number nine.
The ranking was full of holidaymakers favourites.

Taking the first spot of both best island in the world and best island in Europe was Milos in Greece.
In second place was Folegandros, also in Greece, while Madeira came third.
Sicily came fourth and Santorini fifth.
However, at number nine, a British island made its entry.
Skye and the Hebrides beat the Greek island of Paros, which rounded up the top 10 islands in Europe.
Skye also beat Ibiza, Capri, Mykonos and Crete.
Corfu, the Azores and Rhodes all came after the Scottish island.
Favourite holiday destinations such as Corsica, the Canary Islands or Malta could not compete.
Skye gets fantastic reviews online.
