Britain’s cheapest city break is ‘wonderful’ – full list

The expert travel team at Premier Inn looked for the UK’s best value city breaks by searching for their cheapest or free attractions. The winning city could be the perfect destination for a summer staycation.

Newport was crowned as the UK’s cheapest city break with the most affordable or free attractions.

The Welsh city had 13 free attractions by Premier Inn’s count and the average cost of the city’s top 15 attractions was just 75p.

Tourists could head to Newport Wetlands for a free day out, an RSPB managed wildlife reserve.

For a historical day out, visitors can check out the incredible artefacts at the National Roman Legion Museum in nearby Caerleon.

With free entry, tourists can have a budget friendly day out and learn more about Wales’ Roman history.

A tourist ‘Tigi_Higgins’ wrote on Tripadvisor: “Wonderful museum. Really enjoyed our visit here and the Roman Centurion’s helmet was amazing.”

Tourists can also visit the Caerleon Amphitheatre which could once seat up to 6,000 spectators.

The Romans would have watched bloodthirsty battles between gladiators and exotic animals in the arena.

Bournemouth was the UK’s second cheapest break and the city’s beach was recently crowned England’s best.

The average cost of an activity in Bournemouth was just £1.50 while tourists could relax on the beach for free.

Tourists could also wander the city’s colourful Lower Gardens or leave the city centre to check out Hengistbury Head Beach.

Another Welsh city took third place on the list. The average price of an activity in Swansea was just £2.40.

Swansea has an incredible coastline and tourists should make sure to check out the Gower Peninsula or Three Cliffs Bay.

Newcastle grabbed fourth place on the list and could be the ideal destination for tourists looking for nightlife.

Leeds rounded off the top five and it’s a great year to visit as the city celebrates its culture with an exciting programme of events.

From the Leeds Jazz Festival in May to the Summer Solstice Asian Music Festival in June, there’s plenty to get excited about this year.
