Airbnb guest fuming at host’s strict kitchen rules over tap water and fridge

A holidaymaker was left baffled after arriving at their Airbnb to find a massive list of "rules" to follow. The anonymous guest posted a snap of the list on Reddit to share their frustration at the ridiculous restrictions placed on them by their hosts for the kitchen.

The poster claims that when they arrived to their stay they found a list of rules which warned them against damaging certain items. It even stated that drinking from the tap should only be done "at their own risk" despite also saying that it was "OK" do so…

But, the rules only got more bizarre from there and told them when they were allowed to use the dishwasher – between 9.30am and 10.30pm – and what could go in it. It even dictated how many pieces of crockery they were permitted to use per meal – despite the host having no way to tell if they followed the advice.

Other restrictions placed on the visitors said that they couldn’t keep food in the fridge for more than one day. They also said that if they needed anything extra – such as "advanced cutlery" or even serving trays – they would have to call the host to ask. to use them. This was also the case for "minor repairs" of appliances or instruction manuals.

The first list stated that guests may only use "one dish and one glass per meal". How they would know whether this was followed is a mystery but it added underneath: "We keep it clean and expect you to as well" – which is fair enough even though most people know to clean everything they have used after a meal anyway.

The second rule stated: "all dishes and glasses must be cleaned by hand" which is strange considering there was a dishwasher in the Airbnb. Though the host added that they had "issues in the past" with non-compliance to the rule – presumably chipped dishes or cracked glasses in the dishwasher.

The next statement read: "No dishwasher use during neighbourhood quiet hours" in all capital letters. The hours that noise could be made were from 9.30am to 10.30pm, plus as additional hour from 1pm to 2.30pm – prime post-lunch hours – and the hosts said that they had received "numerous complaints about the noise and have respected the neighbourhood quiet hours by not using major electronics."

After that there was an unusual request placed on the guests staying in the Airbnb. They asked the holidaymakers not to "bend our spoons" as though it was a common occurrence. To add to the impact of the rule the note stated: "spoons are meant to be used as utensils only".

Then came the rather ominous statement about the tap water which stated "tap water is okay" despite going on to note that you should only "drink at your own risk" – we would not be taking that risk after such an unusual warning, but it definitely depends which country the Airbnb is in as some areas are not safe for tourists to drink.

Finally the note stated that holidaymakers should under no circumstances "keep any food in the refrigerator for more than 16 hours". This was apparently for "sanitary reasons" though most people would scoff at the short time frame as many foods will keep for days or even a week before going off – and even longer before becoming a health hazard.

The baffled holidaymaker shared the list to Reddit and said: "This Airbnb host's kitchen rules…" garnering over 26,000 likes and hundreds of enraged comments that railed against the bizarre restrictions placed on them. One person asked: "WTF are advanced cutlery needs, and why is it under lock and key?"

Another commenter added: "I’m getting mixed messages from 'TAP WATER IS OKAY drink at your own risk'". To which a fellow poster noted: "I would not feel comfortable in that house. I feel like you'd be on edge the whole time lol" and another commented: "

But, it was the 16-hour fridge rule that had many commenters completely astounded. One such poster said: "This was the one that made zero sense to me. Well, that and the fact that their dishwasher is apparently loud enough to wake the dead. Seriously though.. how does one write that down as a rule while holding a straight face. It has to be a joke. Also, how would they even know if you kept food in the fridge for longer than 16 hours? Also, what's the point of having a fridge if you can't store food in it? That's kinda the entire purpose of a fridge."
