Cathay Pacific giving away free tickets in Hong Kong tourism promotion

Cathay Pacific will give away tickets for flights to Hong Kong from its U.S. gateways of New York, Boston, Los Angeles and San Francisco on the evening of May 17.

The giveaway is part of the “Hello Hong Kong” promotional campaign launched by the Hong Kong Tourism Board in February in an effort to draw tourists back after the Chinese territory’s long Covid closure. The Airport Authority of Hong Kong plans to give away 500,000 tickets globally.

Cathay will be the distributor in the U.S. market, though the tourism board didn’t specify how many promotional tickets will be available.

“A limited number of roundtrip economy class tickets to Hong Kong will be offered in the U.S. beginning May 17 at 5:00 p.m. PST/ 8:00 p.m. EST,” reads an email from the tourism board. “There is a limit of one ticket per transaction while supplies last.”

In order to be eligible for the giveaway, individuals must join the Cathy loyalty program. Tickets won’t be free, as taxes, fees and surcharges will still apply. Cathay currently assesses a fuel surcharge of $118 per segment on tickets purchased in the U.S.

For a chance to access the tickets, U.S.-based Cathay members need to sign up at the Cathay Pacific website to receive a promotional code.

Those who obtain the tickets must travel within nine months.
