Guests of the Westin Maui Resort & Spa, Kaanapali’s restaurant Hale Moolelo will be able to take part in a unique cultural activity called “When the Shadows Fall” at sunset. It’s an awa tasting ceremony that celebrates a medicinal Hawaiian plant known as awa or kava.
To make the drink, the plant’s roots are mashed into a liquid, and this will be mixed with juice to make it more palatable. Not only is awa considered a wellness beverage, but awa is often used for its relaxation and stress relieving effects. It is usually offered during social and ceremonial occasions.
“At Westin Maui, we want Hawaii’s host culture to be the steward of the guest experience,” said Mike Kass, general manager of The Westin Resort & Spa, Kaanapali, in a press release. “Every day, we have a robust schedule of cultural activities for our guests to participate in and make meaningful connections with some of the most profound aspects of the Hawaiian culture.”
The awa tasting will be accompanied by live music, a chant and lighting of the torches.
