Partial access will be restored to the popular Big Island destination Waipio Valley beginning Sept. 19. It had been closed earlier this year due to hazardous road conditions. Pedestrian access is still prohibited, but tours are allowed.
The amendment to the County of Hawaii’s emergency rules allows access for Hawaii Island residents, Native Hawaiian practitioners and tour operators. Uncovered vehicles, such as ATVs, and horseback access is not allowed at this time.
Visitors hoping to go into Waipio Valley will need to book tours with covered vehicles. Planning and repair work to the road is ongoing.
